Moved to the valley 15 years ago from NE Oregon. Had never salmon fished with a pole before (used a pitchfork in the 70's before I knew any better) and was invited to go on the Nestucca around Thanksgiving time. Caught a steely and thought that was cool so I went back east for xmas and bought my stepfathers wood drift boat he built as my key to fishing heaven. Came back and decided to go the first day I had free. :hoboy: Went to the store at Hebo for a shuttle. I didn't pick up on the hints to not go by the clerk.

I put in at Farmers, by myself and proceeded to float and try to fish but couldn't get the boat to do what I wanted and was going way faster that I remember the other guy was when I caught the fish at Thanksgiving so I decided to drag the anchor. (I know what you are thinking) Anchor hung and the boat was swaying back and forth violently as I tried to pull it free, finally did lucky for me. Just above the 101 bridge I was thrown by the current into a tree hanging out and nearly capsized. Then just free drifted to the takeout at three rivers safely finally.

Went back to the store to tell my experience and then they explained about river level, water condition and such. I was trying to fish at 7.5 feet!!!! No wonder I was the only guy out there. Lived to tell this story luckily.....

My best thrill was having my 8 year old son catch his first salmon last October on the Siletz. 40lb'er and a little dark, made my 25 pound hen look small but I was sure proud of him.

Yes, I am an avid elk hunter too. Have taken many bulls with pointed sticks on the East side. Needed more challenge and solitude.

Well... That sounds like a hell of a first float on a swollen tucca... If you wan't to take the boat out for some winter steelie action this year give me a holler if you got an open seat. we live pretty close I'am about 3 miles outside of Dallas.

Thanks for the story. I really enjoy the story part of ifish. Sounds like a fearful time on the drift. My soninlaw just got a drift boat and talks of going for winter steelies. I may go with him after a few guided trips or someone else with us that knows more. Water is way to cold this time of year for a swim. SS  graemlins/applause.gif

I can remember stupid things I have done on the water, too. Things that I'm sure people looked at and shook their heads before I learned the ropes.
But, it is in doing these things that you learn!
I remember not knowing what the heck this silver thing was in my brother's tackle box. It was a silver flatfish. I tied it on my rod, and dangled it in the Necanicum, off the bank at my friends house.
I hooked a HUGE steelhead!
Now I know what a flatfish does!!!
