Hay Steve no report, but I could use some advise? I've never gone crabbing and I'm spending the Holiday in Ocean Side and thought I'd give it a try. I kept the last couple of Salmon carcasses for bait, now I need to know the next step?
Man I'm still hungover from the game yesterday glad I didn't try and fish today...

Crabbed the mouth of the columbia today. We limited in about 3 hours. The last hour was the best. We started before the tide turned.
Should have waited a bit. Fish parts on 3 pots and 3 rings.

Fishbait,
I went to the morning tide in Netarts Bay on Friday and got eight large ocean type crabs in about an hour or so. Four were well off the measurer and all were heavy. There were 10-12 boats working the area between the mouth and the bend before the launch so there was moderate pressure as well. I probably could have stayed and got other four to fill my limit but I decided not to. It's really only me eating them (the wife will only eat them in salad and my son is only six months) so it is a matter of how many crabs in that condition can a person eat before they burst.
I ran two box traps and a ring with chicken. I started roughly 20 minutes before the bottom of the tide and finished 45-50 minutes after. The red rock crab traffic was moderate this time with 50% of the pulls being 100% Dungeness. Most of the reds were gigantic yet empty so I didn't keep any of them. However in another month they will be taking a swim in yee'old crock o' crab-boil.
Good luck

fishbait,
We crabbed Netarts yesterday. We started at 7a.m. and ended up with 17 after 4 hours. It wasn't near as good as it was last year. More boats out there than I have seen before. I might try Hammond area next weekend.

Also,
A buddy of mine just called from Charelston. They bagged three limits of very decent crab in about three hours on Saturday. The commercials are lining up with Washington and Californians, which pleases me to no end. Dec. 10th for us Northern folks, Dec. 1st for our Southern friends. There was a post on this website regarding the ODFW announcement. It's also on their website.

Fishbait,
The wife and I crabbed T- bay on Thursday and Friday and got 32 crab for 4 pulls with 3 traps. Used shad and Safeway week old fried chicken. Some soft ones yet so we put some back that were too soft. Put traps down in the channel out from crab harbor and at the point just before the jetty on the south side. Hope that helps good luck, they are tasty.

Nehalem wasn't supposed to be good from what we were told Sat. and at Brighton Sunday but we got 12 with our four folding traps in about four hours. It's the best we've done since moving over here so we're pretty pleased. Two were wider than the scale. The best bait by far was the tuna head we had. The others were salmon carcasses and a tuna carcass. We went to the little bay just upstream from Brighton. Somebody on ifish said stay out of the main current so we did esp. since there will be a negative tide tonite. Fished about four hours Sat but we were the only boat dragging lines seems like everyone is saying the run is over. Don't know just rookies. Used my sons cleaning technique works slick. If you don't know. Break the shell off from the back pulling forward, break the rest in half, holding the legs give it a little fling and then rinse the cavity.

Crabbed the buoy 20 area today. Got 2 limits in about 2 hours. All hard, (threw back 1 semi-soft one) all at least 6"+, no amputees. Nice weather, pretty good day altogether.
Got 22 in the boat, then pulled up 6 keepers in one pull and had to do some quick crab sorting and kept the biggest and hardest ones.
Saw a few big commercial boats moored in the Skipanon with pots stacked on deck and ready to go. Won't be long! :depressed:

Crabbed near Buoy 20 yesterday! Beautiful Day. We were in about 35+ feet of water using shad and chicken. We had 5 people in the boat and we got our 60 crabs in 1-1/2 pulls. We were using 8 pots.
If you want limits ----- go here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crabs are big and full! Most of the crabs do not require using your checker. They are big!

I've never done any crabbing in the lower Columbia but I'm hoping to go out of Chinook this weekend. Sounds like most are crabbing on the Oregon side around 20 and 22, is there good crabbing between Chinook and Ilwaco on the Washington side? I plan on using rings since we will be on the Washington side. Also, about what depth should we be looking for and what length of rope is necessary for the different depths? And finally, if you are "tending" your rings do you have to have the red and white buoy? Sorry for all the questions but I've wanted to try this the last couple of years and haven't made it out. Sounds like this is the time. Thanks for the help!

After being blown off the water Monday at Buoy 22, decided to crab out of Illwaco Tues. AM 3 limits. It is still windy on the OR side but it was relatively calm on WA side.
