View Full Version : How much have you spent for a rod?
We've been talking about how many rods we have. I remember, fondly, the days when I thought $100 was really expensive ... then I bought a Lamiglas Esprit Magnum. Fly rods were what broke my bank. I had the opportunity to try out and to fish with some amazing cane rods - ranging up to $2500. Well, that still seems too expensive for me, but I did spring for what I still consider the best steelhead fly rod I've ever held; a Scott 896-4T ... got a deal on it for a mere $430! What's the most you've ever paid for a rod?

I sure hope my wife doesn't read this. First a rod count, now prices......
Most expensive would have to be a Lamiglas TI2000 when theyfirst came out. Paid about $400. Next would be a G Loomis - $350.

I haven't bought a rod for a long time. In 1983 I bought a Fenwick Boron 8'3" at Larry's for $130. It has amazing feel but no trigger.

Well let's see... I think I'm about an average of 30 rods behind all of you and at about an average cost of.. ummm... say $200, Im gonna need a pile of cash about knee high. I better go see what the wife has bought recently at the mall. Might be able to negotiate. Hmmm.... lip stuff, fingernail polish, new blouse, expensive salon hair stuff,...she smells kinda different too. A couple of new rods oughta do! graemlins/idea.gif

Most expensive rod I have is a St. Croix spin cast rod I bought at a yard sale for $5. See, I stripped of the guides (only had three and a tip), went up to Angler Workshop and bought 8 carbide steel guides, extra rigging tip for about $85.00, the guide thread, colorfast, epoxy and varnish was another $30. Then the time spent on Father's workbench working on it for two mos., ignoring the wife (now ex-wife, an expense unto itself) so I would have to buy (or she would retail retalitate) presents for her, then the hickory for a real hand-turn handle that we broke several times on the lathe so that we redid it to the tune of about $100 in wood, end stop and forestock ... I reckon I could not sell that rod now with everything I have on it. And to make matter's worse, I have a Penn 49 Mariner on it that I bought at an estate sale for $12 but then had Ollie Damon's restore for me to the tune of $60 ...... My pocket book would be better off it I abandoned my thoughts of picking up second hand equipment and fixing it up to SAVE money and just order what I need direct from Cabela's
