Iv been thinking about this post for a few days.Trying to deside whats been my best day fishing. I live in Newport and fish alot , so its hard to pick a best story. I desided on a strange story instead.
It was a beautiful clear day in early May, without a breath of wind about 10 years ago. I was fishing by myself on Yaquina Bay in my drift boat. The tide was coming in slow and I was running out to the bar drifting in mouching a herring looking for a springer. After a couple hours I had caught two ling cod and lost a third one, I had just gotten back out to the bar and had slowed down to start drifting back in when my motor hit something.
I turned to see what it was and to my surprise I was on the back of a very large grey whale. It came up under the boat three times almost rolling it over each time. After my initial shock I was able to reach back grab the tiller and get away. I ran about 100 feet and the county sherif came up along side me, he said he saw the whole thing and though my boat was going over for sure. Just then the whale came up between our two boats, at that point I told him I'd had enough for one day and was out of there. If it hadn't happen to me I would never have beleived it. I still see the sherif around town from time to time and he still talks about it.
