How many of you have been ripped off by leaving gear in a boat over the weekend, or until your next trip? Or how about tied up at the docks. Some good friends had everything taken out of their boat as it sat next to their house. The thieves cut the cables on the stereo and the VHF. Took bags of coats PFDs,speakers, gloves, sunglasses, brand new GPS unit... Did the police do anything??????? No!!!!!!!!!! "Write a list and we we'll file a report"
The boat was in plain sight from 2 streets, and nobody saw or heard anything. We all have dogs and none of them were barking. They even took over 100 CDs. They took the music that we jig for Halibut to :depressed: :depressed: :depressed: The GPS had the coordinates to the ULTIMATE ling hole out of Newport.  The one hole I haven't been able to get a ride to.... I hope someone comes up with something for sale in the area...... There is no excuse for this kind of stuff. The people that were ripped off would have propably given half of it away if it were needed. Seems we are having an epidemic of sorts.

Knock on wood, I've never had a problem. I'm not dumb enough to think crime doesn't happen, so I lock up what I want to keep. But just to see what would happen, I left a 6-pack of beer in my driveway. I figured it would be the most tempting thing for potential crooks. That beer has remained untouched for 8 years! It's still there! Makes me feel safer than any security system ever would.

Burglary rates in Portland since 1997 are still down at least 25%, although in 2001 they did tend to go up some. Unfortunately that can happen on economic downturns.

If you like it, lock it.

Tag-a-long -Crooks and sneak-thieves are low life scum! We all suffer loses from in onw way or the other. I have been hit several times for tools and fishing stuff. Marking everything makes the retrival easier and increases the aprehension or prosecution. Some pawn shops/individuals wont buy stuff that has a persons name that is not the seller. Also locking everything and then keeping it out of sight as well. Yet still the crooks will do their stupid little tricks to get what you worked hard for. If we all made it harder for them to get our stuff they might figure it out that working is easier than trying to steal. I know I have made it too easy for those shameful nogood bad guys but that has changed.

I have allways tried to keep things in original shape but now it all gets marked like CD's and Electronics. It is better to deter a theft than to have everything in mint condition. Police stations usually have engravers for loaning and tips on theft prevention. Yes depending on the cop the would turn their back while you whacked some bad guy if you caught them. I have had some of Ptlds finest aks me "why didnt you tire iron the guy?" It is not advisable of course and never take the law into your own hands unless it is self defense. It was self defense when you caught the guy right?
What was that called giving the badguy a blanket party?

Tire irons may not be the answer, but I got my revenge once and it still feels good.
One day during the gas crisis ( for those who can remember that far back) I heard something in my driveway about three in the morning. I turned my porch light on and looked out the window. I noticed a gas can by my truck and a hose leading to the gas can. I went outside loaded for bear and didn't see any one around. After awhile I went back in the house and got a cup of sugar. I then went back outside and dumped the sugar in the gas can and mixed it up real well. I then went back inside and turned the lights off. About fifteen minutes later I see this guy dressed in black ambling down the street. He slowed down at my house, looked around, and then grabbed the gas can and ran back down the street.
I am sure his engine gave him quite a surprise after running that gas in it for awhile! I still chuckle about it once in awhile.

Pete just locking things up doesn't make it safe. For instance the car we locked Thursday night and yesterday it was gone, fishing gear in the trunk... everything. We only had it for 5 months too.

I was up at Bonneville shad fishing one time, guy broke his rod so I lent him an extra one I had. We were fishing a little ways apart and next thing I know I look up and he's gone! So much for being nice!

Friends of ours were cleaning fish at the Hammond ramp with the boat parked just around the corner from the cleaning station and came back a few minutes later to his boat minus the kicker (that was locked on) . Also had somebody steal the safety chain off the trailer at the same ramp.

During my time at the U of O, I had a total of 8 locked bikes stolen. Grrr. I've never had anything stolen while fishing, though.

Get real!!!!!!!!! I wanted them to get their a**es out here and take a few fingerprints. every surface in the boat was smooth. At least make a showing... I am sure when I have to shoot some jerk wad that tries to get into my house they will show up. You may have missed the point that it was the neighbors boat, but it does really pi** me off that the cops can't even tear themselves away from a 4 car traffic stop to come out to the country.

Oh yeah, the storage boxes did have locks on them. Evidentaly not big enough though. Nothing worse thatn a thief!!!!!!!

Did the police do anything??????? No!!!!!!!!!! "Write a list and we we'll file a report"<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">What did you want them to do? A stakeout?

Your information is now on file and should they pull over some creep who has a bunch of gear in his car, they can run the serial numbers and see if in fact they are stolen.

Reminder to all:

1- Record serial numbers and/or indentifying items on your stuff.

2- Get insurance! It is so much worth it.

been ripped off a few times of tools and fishing gear; all when i lived in medford....the best one was when i heard my truck fire up in the driveway about 10pm on a friday night....i ran ouside in my boxers and caught a theif in my truck trying to get the parking brake off...the idiot did not lock the door, and was shocked when i opened the door and dragged him out and bloodied his nose.....his 3 friends took off running.....i figured the kid had suffered enough and let him go, but my neighbor was trying to be a good samaritan and called the cops.......when they arrived and took my statement they told me that they would look for theses guys and if they were found that i would be charged with assualt for hitting this kid in my truck and on my property......unbelievable!!!!!!......becareful with the tire iron......

The tire iron wasn't my idea more than one cop suggested it at different occasions as well as making the point I understood it would be in self defense. Making me feel they would have totally understood the situation being a whooping for an averted theft. The cops know jails and courts might not be effective enough deterent.

1) ID mark all your propery
2) Lock it up
3) Keep it out of sight
4) Insure it & take pictures of it
5) Big Dog in the yard scares fence jumpers

What else did I forget anything?
