View Full Version : Good Etiquette?

I was fishing along yesterday pulling plugs. The hole we were fishing is about 200 yards long and the deep slot is probably 20 yards wide. There was one other boat fishing the hole pulling plugs as well.

We started working the hole 5 min later we get our first steelhead, nice little nate we let go. We hooked the fish in the middle of the hole as we were letting it go some guy that happened to be passing by decided to drop his anchor right in the middle of the slot about 20 yards from us. There were 5 people in his boat and they all casted their bobbers out.

Hmmmm OK. graemlins/eek13.gif

Kept trolling upstream and about 2 min later another fish on. As we were fighting the fish another biat/bobber boat stops and anchors about 10 yard from us after we release, again right in the slot. Now there is hardly any room to pull around these two boats.

Is this common etiquette for bait/bobber fishers? Should I just troll around them when they obviously took the spot we were catching in? The past 20 years I have been flyfishing and flyfishers tend to give each other a lot of room so I am thinking this may be par for the course?!? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

What, if anything would you have done?

Which river? It is common on the John Day / Deschutes for people to be less than considerate. At least most of the times ive been there...

It's one thing to have people stickin around a hot spot but these people have 0 fishing manners so to speak. I don't get why they think that it's par to fish right into you while you are obviously pullin plugs they know it and hope you'll just get tired of them and move on.
I think alot of guys just don't care and live their life just to be jerks. You know our personal space that everyone has by God there should be a rule to give everyone their space. Cause there is a whole bunch of river.......

It depends,
If you are fishing fall nooks, well I see it there more than anyplace else.Steelies usually don't make folks that stupid(rude)but some folks dont need a fish as an excuse to be stupid. It comes naturally to them. Some folks are not rude at all, they are simply greenhorns. For this reason I try to explain why someone has wronged me before I begin to tell them things about their mother. It also depends on how many folks are on the river.I have fished(if you call it that)the Wilson for winter brats and there were 60-70 boats from the guide shop to Sollie.Needless to say you started to pull plugs about 70 yards above the boat below you. There is simply no other way.I don't fish the Wilson anymore because of crap like that. But I am kinda whiney,so I like to fish the run myself before someone else has a go at it.If someone anchors on a tailout as I pull thru the hole from the top, I ask them to stop fishing until I get a chance at them(this assumes I got to the water before the other boat)if they listen (usually they tell me things about my mother)then I pull plugs all the way thru the run.Tailout and all.As I pass over their water,I ask if they appreciate me "Hogging the hole"they always reply "No you jerk".Then I tell them that is how I felt when you shorted me the gravy water. If that don't work(depends on the front seater,2 of my regulars are about 6'10 and 300plus.If thats the case we row next to them and calmly discuss the situation. It always works. Some day an idiot will point a gun at us,but he wont shoot.Hey it's just a fish.Wonder why I row some real tough water to get some solitude?Wonder why I don't like the broodstock idea the best times of the year will be ruined by tiny men with big egos and small brains.I would rather tie leaders.
I know this post seems down, and it is not my intention. There are a slug of pretty and quiet waters that hold fish.I don't talk of these places because they are on the endangered species list. That and I don't wanna see any more invaded by the small men.
Good Luck.

It's been my experience that the more people in a boat that cuts you off, the more likely there's gonna be an ugly confrontation. The testosterone levels are just too highly concentrated when there's 4 or 5 guys in one boat. (there should be a warning label on the boat) 1 or 2 guys can usually be reasoned with if you're diplomatic. But add some alcohol......well, you know what happens then.
It's a lot better for the ol' blood pressure just to move on and find a quiet stretch of river. If I wanted an argument I could save a lot of time and gas by staying in town and talking to my neighbors or my ex-wife. :hoboy:

If the hole's good enought and usually produces fish, you can gaurantee that there's gonna be another couple of boats in it. Just like a good hole for corkie fisherman. I get mad when the guy fishes right next to ya and he has the entire hole to fish.

Krucheif,
my fron seaters look like that cause genetics made them that way.I do not pick frontseaters based on the missing link factor. But it does keep everyones voice down at a reasonable level so we can discuss what is happening and what we can do to avoid the problem in the future.I do not let folks long me on water I got to first without hearing from me why it is wrong and impolite to do so.If you don't say anything the greenhorns will never know they have done anything wrong. The impolite folks need a talking to also because it they are rude and you don't call them on it,it just reinforces the behavior as rewarding.
You may be right that some idiot may kill another human over a fish. And some folks wonder why I would rather hunt ducks all winter long on private land or run class 4 rapids to get away from the tiny men.It is simply not worth the effort to fish with these folks.I talked to a friend today(one of the Apes as a matter of fact)and he was talking about the broodstock program.I bickered on how it will ruin one of the last quality fisheries in the state. If you doubt this,I ask you this....Will you bring your pistol to the river in the spring? If so,what is your main concern for protecting yourself from-Man or beast?
for what it's worth,my favorite fron seaters are my wife and our niece. She is 10 years old.Do you think I should go chase brats with them on the Wilson?Sorry if this seems negative, but hatchery fisheries bring out the masses.I am dissapointed in humanityif I need to bring my .45 fishing.Life is too short to be afraid when you are playing.I would rather stay at home and tie leaders til my quiet places get fish in them.FishnGeek.You are so right.it's just fishing.

I agree Mark; I was only taken aback a little due to my own preconceived programming regarding the big man syndrome (it has a lot to do with me working in corrections most likely).

God Bless You, and I just hope no one ever hurts you or one of your friends. I just am to well aware of what a human life is worth in today’s times.

Thanks,KC.Nice to think someone may be looking out for me.I hope it never comes to a fight, one of the apes has NEVER been in a fight in his whole life. But he looks good sitting there. After I found that out I asked him if his daughter could take him.He did not answer.HaHa.Kinda like a stork with brown hair!

My friend and I had a drift boat and because of stuff like that we sold the boat and my friend quit fishing. I am a bankie on the coast and have a boat for the sturgeon on the Columbia and I sometimes wonder if that is worth it considering the ramp hassels I have seen.

However I like fishing and will be there on the river to say hi.

Hey Flatfish - speaking of good manners,

I was just wondering why you dont use a space between sentences?

I really enjoy reading the content of your posts, but (speaking for myself) it is a pain to read when you don't leave a space after periods or commas. Sometimes I even skip over your stuff cause of this.

Is there a reason for this?

Please.
Do not even SUGGEST the use of arms to settle a fishing dispute.
This make us look pretty bad, as sports fishermen and women.

Yikes!
