First, to share a secret; If the above Pic is a Eagle Creek WS as i suspect at first glance then you all can now know that the "fish" above is NOT EARLY. Read into that what you may.

I hope the rest of the run is a "little" heathier loooking. I think that is a skinny fish.
What clips did it have ?
How long was it ?
What is the state of sexual delvopment ?

Seperate Issue:

Aren't you all amazed at the huge number late Native Summer Steelhead in the Clackamas the last 3 years ?
Me thinks you all need to be taking scale samples and sending them to the Clackamas ODF&W Regional Office.

So Steve do you think it is a downstreamer? It does look a little skinny on the belly and I have heard that steelhead will turn bright again after spawning. I am not going to try to judge. It's hard to tell without looking at the fish first hand.

Hey, ssteelheadsteve, you wrote:

"First, to share a secret; If the above Pic is a Eagle Creek WS as i suspect at first glance then you all can now know that the "fish" above is NOT EARLY. Read into that what you may."

I guess I don't understand? What are you trying to say? I caught my first winter fish last year 2 miles up Eagle Creek on Nov. 11th. (we did have more water) Why is "fish" in quotes, you think it is not a "fish"?

"I hope the rest of the run is a "little" heathier loooking."

This fish was extremely healthy, not a scale out of place, a very fresh fish. Abosolute beauty. No abraisions on belly or fins, not even any sand under the belly scales.

"I think that is a skinny fish."

Most fish are after you slit their bellies and pull the eggs / guts out.

"What clips did it have ?"

Adipose.

"How long was it ?"

Dont know.

"What is the state of sexual delvopment ?"

Full of eggs, eggs were small pea sized.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why are you picking on my fish? Are you a little jealous, maybe? Hmmmmmm?

It kinda torques my crank,

Here on Ifish, either

- you dont post a pic and everyone says your full of willamette river water (****).

or

- you post a pic and some people like studderheadsteve above feel the need to rip on it.

Why is that?

Hey UG I'm with you! Who gives a d@!% about the make or model of the fish. You went out, had fun and had some action. I think some people on the bb get a little green because they can't get out. Or are so unhappy with there own lifes that they feel the need to ruin the excitement of others. Come on it's just fishing guys! Please keep the pics and stories coming because some of us enjoy feeding off the success of others. Can't we all just get along. Great fish and hope you catch many more.

UG -

Now I'm not saying it isn't a real picture or anything, but it just sorta looks, if you turn the angle of your head slightly, well, I don't know how to say this but.....

Is that an elk in the back of that picture?????

The conspiracy theorists abound! And that fish doesn't look a pound over 42. And is that metalflake paint I see on it?

The "comebacks" or "downstreamers" ALWAYS have a very ratty tail from digging out their redds. This fish does not seem to have a ratty tail. And turn bright again? Yeah after going back to sea perhaps.

I am with ya UG. If you say it is what it is then it is what it is.

The fish looks like a summer fish. Definately a chromer. On the Clack, all winter steelhead have another clip except for the 3 salt gnat creek, which would be over ten pounds. eagle creek has a left vent clip.

Nice chromer UG...

Ramstrong
11-08-2002, 03:51 PM
That's not a down stream fish. As previously stated she's a hen and would be beaten up in the tail region if she was a downstreamer. Second, it's a bit early to be finding downstream fish, even the summers wont be spawning for a month or two. PS, if you want to see what a downstreamer looks like here you go. I made that mistake once. http://www.xprt.net/~ryandsar/pictures/shead3.jpg
Once being the keyword. You can't see it, but the bottom half of the tail was tattered. Didn't know to look then, but knowing is half the battle.

UG, you look familiar, did you get passed by two guys in a silver/black driftboat?. If so, I know your spot but it's safe with me.....
We got one wild coho(released of course) and two Summers, all on the blue pirate #30. First Summer was almost chrome and the eggs were alot smaller than I'm used to seeing this time of year, nice red meat and put on a show.
Congrats on the fish, looks like a Winter to me, can't say as I've got one out of there this early but did get a 2001 Summer fish Dec. 2000, kinda cool I think.

D'Oh, just went back and noticed the date, 11-07, not today. Nope you didn't see us but you do have that familar "bankie" look about ya.....

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Who are you talking about? ssteelheadsteve is a fishing guide as are a few others on this thread.

Just checking to see who you're pointing fingers at.

And another thing...downstreamers don't ALWAYS have a rubbed out tail. Have seen two or three ( some kept ) that did not have this characteristic taken in the last few years.

See the black spots on Ramstrong's fish? And lots of them? That seems to be a little more common in the one's I've seen and heard about.

Just an observation.

UG's fish is CHROME in any Book

First -

For the last time - the fish had eggs in it. It was not a downstream spawner.

It might have been a late summer, It had a little bit of an eyeshadow. It might have been an early winter. It was fresh and its November for-gosh-sakes.

Don't read to much into a finclip. It is not the be all and end all. I have helped out finclipping fish at hatcheries several times. When you are doing the clipping, it is not uncommon to miss a clip. Fins on smolts (especially steelhead) are tiny, hard to see, and slippery. You are usually in a hurry, your fingers are frozen, and missing a tiny little fin is not hard.

Go look in the hatchery holding tank for returning adults sometime (or help spawn them) for a "100% clipped run" and you will see that only 90%, maybe less, have the proper finclip. Those unclipped adults in the tank are usually not wild. Finclipping is not an exact science, especially when using volunteers.

Last year I got a steelhead on Eagle Creek in December that had the left ventrical clip but was missing the adipose clip. I have gotten several springers that had half or partial adipose clips.

By the way... speaking of eggs, I landed 3 pinksided summers on friday (11/8). Kept one 7 lb 11 oz adiposed clipped hen, the eggs in the rosycheeked pinksided summer were BB sized, the eggs in the pic of the fish posted were at least twice that size. About the same size as a #14 corkie.

UglyGreen,

Now I see why for the name (you wear green alot...huh?)!

No matter what everyone who has contributed to this thread has increased my knowledge of my favorite sport.

FWF, don't assume though, just because one is a guide that they are some kinda God! I know people who fish MY river who work in mills, drive truck, and other...that will out fish all of us!

I personally have parked next to guides and pulled fish out from under their boat (especially on MY river). My good friend who is a new guide, used to excell in putting clinics on for guides and their clients.

Guides are like any other professional...some good and some bad. Just because they have passed a few tests dosen't make them an authority.

UG, you are ugly, but you ROCK!

Sweet fish buddy.

How 'bout swapping trips, a Santiam run for a Clackamas?

SteelheadSteve, I got some salmon that my cat won't eat, if it'll make you feel better I'll send it to you and FWF.

OH yeah before I forget...

Kruchief,

Where do I begin?? Why does everyone think we're picking on his fish ? Re-read my posts and you will see that I congratulated him on his fish. Twice.

I never claimed any guide was a God, I just replied to someone's comment about not being able to cactch a fish. Seems if you've got an opinion or tell someone they are wrong, then you can't catch fish. By the way , where is YOUR river?? Never heard of Kruchief Creek

Keep the salmon. I have plenty from this last week, and the week before, and the week before that.

This is starting to get annoying.

Brad ( UGLYGREEN)- Left a message on your cell, and sent an email.

NICE FISH

edit: Since when on Ifish is it everyone else's job to say stuff like" ...move on and shut it...or leave the guy alone...I thought I could have an opinion.
Sorry if we pointed out some facts. Clips are not the end all, but that is how the Clack identifies it's run of winters. Extra clip = winter fish. It is highly unlikely they would completely miss the "extra"one. More likely to slice or semi-cut, but signs of an attempt should be there.

GO BEAVS!!!!!!!

Also, anyone who wants to keep debating about fin clips should volunteer to do some clipping, or go watch the clipping being done. Then you will know first-hand for yourself what really happens. I guess about a 80% - 85% clip rate to be normal. Them little fishies are quite slippery.
