Chum King

Pete,

Isn't it obvious?

#1 the chinook has spotting in both lobes of the tail, a relatively narrow caudal peduncle, and even the black lower gumline is apparent.

#2 the chum isn't quite so obvious, but chums have no spots on the body or tail, they also have a caudal peduncle that is almost round in cross section, and they have a very large pupil to eye ratio that is obvious in the picture. The coloration on the lower jaw on the chum would be essentially the inverse of what you would see on a coho. It goes from light on the outside to dark at the base of the teeth to light again inside of the teeth.

#3 the coho looking close you can just barely see the dark light dark banding pattern on the lower jaw, the streaky nature of the coloration of the tail helps to give it away, and coho have a very wide caudal peduncle which is also fairly obvious in the picture.

#4 the sockeye has no spots, the caudal peduncle is not as wide and flat as the coho.

#5 the pink has large oval spots throughout the tail, and has small loosely set scales. The lower gumline of the pink is often very similar to a chinook, but in the pink the teeth are not very sharp and are fairly loosely set in the jaw while in the chinook they are sharp and firmly set (obviously I can't tell that from the picture, but it is good information to remember).

#6 the steelhead has small round spots throughout the tail, an all white mouth, and the tail is squared off.

Oh yeah, I have seen the picture before too.

While we're waiting for Chum Kings secret, I'll put in my .02 (even though I missed it-I've never seen all those bright at the same time)

1. silver tail and can see the black mouth from here
2. dark fin tips, large pupil, and I guess I can see some green now.
3. No spots on lower lobe of tail and it just looks like one.
4. Definately just looks like one. Distinct blue back and neatly arranged scales.
5. Looks like a silver but has spots on lower lobe of tail.
6. Square tail and anal fin. All white mouth.

Good job again to Chum King!

Okay *** and Jennie,

The guilt is overtaking me. Since I misspelled Oncorhynchus in my answer, I don't feel that I can honestly claim the win.

I therefore am willing to donate my winnings (whatever it was that they were going to be) back to the site for another contest.

I guess that makes this a catch and release contest now.

Yep, I'm sure the winnings stay for another contest. Just don't tell me that I won a tuna qualified fishing vessel.

Next time I'll double check my spelling

Although I didn't have time to play, I figured it out.

First fish is the only fish with a forked, spotted (both lobes) tail, and a black lower gum line. Gotta be a king.

Fish 4 is obviously a sockeye.

Fish 6 is obviously a steelie.

Of the remaining 3 fish, look at the eye on the 2nd fish. Only a chummer has a big ol' eyeball. Fish 2 can only be a chumper.

2 fish left.

Fish 5 has BIG spots on both lobes of the tail, but doesn't have a forked tail. Not a king and can't be the coho. Gotta be the pinky.

Fish 3 is the coho. You'd only know by a process of elimination.

Good Job Chum King! I just now saw his response. I'm not a biologist, but I do have a degree in Fisheries! That's sorta-kinda cheating!
