Do you think this rain over the weekend is going to be enough to push the chums up into the kilchis? I hope so. I want to get out at least once before it closes. Anybody with a recent lower kilchis report?

I would be almost sure that this weekend's rain, as predicted will be enough.
They are waiting to come in.
Hereeeeeeeeeeeee chum salmon!

OK, for only catching two chums in my life, I need some instruction. I don't need to know the spot, just how to.

I caught one chum on the Kilchis about 15 years ago when I was just new at any salmon fishing, and one chum on the Nestucca bobber fishing for chinook. Another guy that day also caught a chum a few minutes before me on the Nestucca. There must be a small run of chum on the Nestucca or something. Has anyone else seen this?

How do you fish for the chum? I have a special friend I want to help catch salmon. We don't have to keep, just catching is fine.

Chums have a hard time passing up a cherise and purple jig under a float. But I don't know if that'll work on the Kilchis as I was using that in bigger water on the Harrison river up in BC.

A few years ago I saw the fish counts that ODF&W did for Chum on the Northern Oregon Coast. I was surprised at the results.

If I remember correctly the following streams have good numbers of chum:
-Kilches River
-Miami River
-Nestucca River (Farmer Creek?)
-Nehalem River (Foley Creek)
-North Nehalem River (Coal Creek)
-Wilson River
However, good luck catching them in any river other than the Kilches and Miami.

I caught the chum on bobber at the old Mouth of Three Rivers, probably 8 years ago. I also caught 6 dark chinook I released that day on bobber. I wish the flood of 1996 didn't mess with that bobber hole, as it's now filled in with gravel, and full of snags.

Darn.

Just one request... if you see the chum splashing around in riffle water please leave them alone. They are spawning. Instead look for nice deep holes to fish in. You will see a number of fly anglers tossing to the spawning fish and walking on the redds but please don't follow their example.

As for what works; They take a drifted green corky and pink (or cerise) yarn or vice versa very well when drift fished with a standard drift setup.

Jennie, any luck with the signs yet? Do you need help getting them up?

Do you think the river will be floatable by Saturday? I know, perhaps it is wishful thinking. But a guy has to have hope.

I couldn't get them to leave my K-15's alone last year, color didn't seem to matter.

I remember when I fished 'em, we would use basically a steelie-coho drift rig up (pencil lead, leader, hook-with chartreuse or pink yarn).Being the humans we are and loving to tinker and find "the best rig up" you will find yourself adding this corkie or that birdie. But it is simple : pink or chartreuse yarn. I prefer the poly fiber stuff, found in fly shops,it fluffs up nice and doesn't get as stringy.
Boy I wish those runs would come back....That is a great way to get a person in to salmon.

The little North Fork Wilson has a good run of chum, though as far as I know I don't think it's ever been open to fishing for them.

Also, my grandpa used to tell me about all the chums and other salmon that used to come into Sand Lake and spawn in the little feeder creeks.

My first banner day(ok more than a fish in a week)was in the eighties on the Kilchis.I was pretty young,13 or so,standing next to me is a guy putting on a clinic. After his umpteenth fish he says"hey kid, heres my rod ,feel em bite?"I didn't.he handed off the rod several times more.I finally felt that tug tug. After that my yellow rod was a chum whuppun machine(it was also my steelie, coho, trout, and king whoopin rod.Hey when you are 13 you make it work.).That day I hooked and landed 3 dogs. The next day I went back and hooked 20.Point is,take a kid fishing when the fishing is good. They will be hooked for life.Keeps em out of trouble later too. What was that guys name?John Thomas.I only know that from seeing him there and at a couple sporting goods shows. He was my hero.
Mark and the ready for the chums to eat a k-16 silver/cerise with a wrap dog.

Catch and Release Chum fishing is open September 16th, through November 15th, it is open, only on the Kilchis and Miami rivers-- you may not target chums in any other rivers.

Thanks, just a reminder.

And stay off the redds!
