I'm thinking about going up this year for some chum fun. Is there any significant activity at Hoodsport? If not can anyone recommend specifically where I could get into some the first part of next week on a lower Sound river or saltwater location?

Easy. The hatchery # is 360-877-5222. the recorded message will let you know how the fishing is. Make sure to be careful to fish within the red bouys as they are militant in enforcing this regulation. last I heard the fish are beginning to show. The local natives beach seine on Tuesdays & Thursdays and take a pretty good haul. If the hatchery isn't your cup o' tea then try the Skokomish, sometimes better fishin' than the hatchery!
Good luck!

hey checkout pictorial pursuits.com link is on this website they have a lot of info on hoodsport combat fishing zone. Zipperlip I dont think I would call this a well kept secret if anything it is overrated and talked about. Lots of other places to catch chums without the crowds.

I am a Seattle area resident and can tell a little about Hoodsport. First of all, it is a favorite spot for fly fishermen because they can convince themselves the fish are really striking at it when really they are just lining them.
It is alot of fun, though, and most everyone has a light-hearted attitude because, after all, these are just chums!!! So that attitude helps makes for a pleasant experience and this is one of my favorite fisheries.
The crowd situation is very tide dependant because the high tide forces everyone up against the hatchery wall. For bank fishing the best thing is to show up at high slack and then follow the tide out. This allows the crowd to spread out. For boat fishing about the opposite is true.
As was mentioned elsewhere, there are numerous rivers and creeks where fishing may be better than Hoodsport. The thing to do is download the Washington regs, look at "Special Rules, Westside Rivers". Find a river or creek where chum fishing is allowed and most likely chums will be found there. In other words, the very fact that it is open and allowed means that they expect a good run that will support a fishery.
