There's some great steelie action going on over on the Clack right now.

This was one of the fish. Was a 29 inch native, but we kept a couple nice hatcheries.
Yeah, it's not as bright as birdhunter's bright, vibrant, active coho,  but it put up a pretty good fight also!
Throughout the day, we hooked and landed 9 steelies. Mostly on flies. Didn't see a ton of action from the other boats out there, just a few. If you can get out there, try it, some nice fish to be had.

Not as "unique" as birdhunters, but I suspect a tad more lively to bring in!

How far up? Above Eagle Creek?

Rock Stick or Fish- You are now another victim hooked for life. I love salmon fishing just as much as I do steelheading. Though there is something special about catching a nice steely! Good job! Glad to hear that you caught your first steelhead. Some people can fish all there lives and never catch a steelhead. It must be a great acomplishment for you. Brian

Time to get back out there again. I was going to try to wait until the end of Nov but this post got me pumped about the winter run.

Thanks for the reminder on Clackamas Summer run fish, went out this AM, hooked first fish on second cast and went 4 for 5 after that in the next hour and a half. two clipped, two not clipped. Clipped fish were a 7.7 puond hen and a 7.5 pound buck. Was very suprised by the nice quality of these summer fish for this late in the year. i can confirm that the water temp has dropped and the bite is excellent.

I tell the truth about 80% of the time.

If we got a 8 pound fish it goes to 10. (20% lie)

If we got 4 fish it goes to 5. (20% lie)

If etc... etc... etc....

 UG<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">So by your previous math, are we to assume that you actually only hooked 4, and of those 2 you landed, only 1.6 came to the bank??

6.16 & 6.0 lbs respectively. Where were they hooked ? In a previous post you admitted being part snagger too

By the way, where were you fishing? Clack prop or mouth of E.C? I'm pretty sure you weren't drifting alone anywhere.

OOH I know, that one spot you got that 17 # steelie. Or would that be a 13.6 fish    ???

Chris

btw-- I know UG, and am just giving him a hard time, cuz he should be WORKING . Nice fish UG, no matter how many or what size ! Any pics to put up ?

Chris,

Check the board at estacada tackle... I got the number 1 spot for the week as of now at 7.7 lbs. But ask me in a week or so and the fish will be 9.2 lbs.

And as for the spot - go up river about 5 miles.

And I wasnt usin a corkie today, was free driftin eggs (gotta love that new florocarbon mainline). Funny thing, on the first fish, I had a minor backlash event and was sorting out the reel, line was slack for about two minutes in the hole, and when I reeled back up the slack there was a fish there!

Hit the Clackamas again this afternoon. Fished 3:30-5:00 PM and was 2 for 4 landing a approx 10 lb. native hen and a 6.3 Lb finclipped buck. No light bites, every fish slammed my eggs. No pressure at all, I never saw another person, the river is loaded.

Are all you guys fishing upriver or is there good steelheading to be had down by the mouth? I'm taking a newbie fishing this afternoon, he is from Idaho so I'd love to put a fish on the end of his rod. Especially a nice chrome hatchery steelie!!! Any info would be wonderful.

Chris, I saw UG in action on Sat.. I didn't see any eggs and I only saw one tiny little fish; so, take everything he claims with a bit larger grain of salt. He was about as far as you can go upstream perched on a stump, and tossing to what he claims were a horde of bright steelhead. Wow, there sure were a lot of fish in the stretch. Good fishing guys.

For Bankbound, and all the guys emailing me, here is the scoop.

As I understand it they are rececling 80-100 fish a week from the North Fork trap back down to Barton.

Barton park... fish upstream, good drift 2-300 yards up from boatramp.

Metro Property... not well known, was an old rock quarry destroyed in floods of 96, purchased by Metro as part of the "greenspace" thing a few years ago. Great fishing, access from the south side of clackamas, bring waders.

Bonnie Luhr state park.... mouth of Eagle Creek good Clackamas access, bring waders.

Feldheimers boat launch... small access, good drift 1-200 ft up from boat launch.

McGiver Park... Over 2 miles of river access, mouth of dog creek is a famous steelhead spot, (hint) check the area between the upper boat launch and River Mill dam

PGE stretch... between the upper end of estacada lake and the North Fork dam (end of steelhead open area) Access from Faraday road on the far side of Estacada. Rough Country, be ready to walk, probably 2 miles of river access, drifts and deep holes at the bottom of a canyon, good fishing, but not for the faint of heart.

Upper end of North Fork resivor up to mile post 32. Open for "adipose fin clipped trout fishing" for the next 2 days. (open May 25-Nov. 1) Note: THIS SECTION IS CLOSED FOR STEELHEAD, but (hint) if you use the same gear for steelhead as for "adipose fin clipped trout fishing" you might be susprised. (Its actually kinda hard to catch "adipose fin clipped trout" here cause all those darn steelhead keep messing with your gear.

You must be thinking of someone else?
