I hope this is not a improper question and I am not looking for anyones honey hole however I would like to fish for steelhead.

Need I wait for the NF Nahelem. Do you know of other rivers or places to fish for steelhead right now.

I stayed home this past weekend because the fish I was seeing and hearing about were dark in tidewater. I like to catch and release steelhead but not salmon boots. That just dont seem like sport.

Oregon somewhere, Clackamas, Sandy, east of the mountain, costal rivers, I just don't know. graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Do I need to hire a guide/boat and go out twards the salt for salmon?

Please dont send me on a wild goose chase or down a deep canyon (I have a heart condition). I could get down there just hard to get back out.

I have not been there and done it myself but I heard that the upper Nestucca has some decent numbers of steelies in it right now. These are summer fish so Im sure alot of them are getting some deep colors to them but if your looking to C&R some nice fish it might be a good place to give a shot.

Ace

There is a good mix of hold over summers sprinkled in with some fresh ones to chase on the coast right now. They will readily take jigs and/or small baits with the cooler water temperatures. The majority of biters will be holding in the riffles leading into the drifts. Drop me an e-mail and I'll point you in the right direction.

Deschutes around warm springs.Coast is ok, but good water access can be a bear at times. There are fresh fish on the coast thru Thanksgiving too.The upper clack should be loaded with fish right now too.Just a few thoughts.
Good Luck.

ace,
the deschutes ( oregon`s) mouth and upriver one can find "holes", just have to spend time to dial it in...youngs guide service seems to be running alot up there. if I were to hire a guide I would look him up. lot of people use #3 and 4 blue foxes in the blue w/ silver blade and also the kelly green with a silver as well as a black blade, use 12Lb. test . if your boating the B run of steelies is getting hot use magnum and wiggle size fire tigers and the hot tigers too, use 20 LB. test, troll out front in the columbia and no crowds right now either, good luck!

From The Guides Forecast... link at the top of the page. I find this site to be well worth the $20 for a year. Get a lot of good info every week and it has paid off for me!

The North Santiam is still productive for steelhead with summers scattered in the upper river and fish holding along ledges. Fall steelhead remain stacked inn anticipation of the run up the Little North Fork at the next sign of rain, making the Mehama area a hotspot. The river level remains good and water temperatures are ideal at the mid 50s.

Good luck!

Well, nestucca isn't too bad, not a lot of water yet.

And as for the Deschutes...well, a long drive for those little peewees  stick local..try the clack..they are stacked in there...and not to difficult to catch. or try the sandy up higher.

as for the N. Santiam...well, be prepared for solely a scenic trip!

fish on,
