My wife and I are heading to Reedsport this Friday and she said she'd go fishing if I want to take one of the boats along.
I need help as I've never fished in that area, but would like to target Salmon (whatever is legal this time of year).
What boat to take?? 19ft open bow Bayliner or 15 ft driftboat???
Where to go and how to fish??? graemlins/1zhelp.gif
Any help from someone who's fished the area lately would help to make this trip memorable. Thanks in advance
Up river from Reedsport.
I'll be in a 14" Smokercraft jon boat with a 30 hp Honda, Friday and Saturday. Wave or give me the finger  . Take the 19' boat, you might have to run up river a few miles to get into the fish..

I agree with Keta. It's a big river down there and the comfort and speed of the 19 will pay off getting you to and from the "spot" as well as letting you troll around in comfort. Be aware that it is really slow right now.
You might want to take some casting gear as well as trolling rigs. Quite a few boats were just floating through the channel casting what looked like big red spinners. I didn't see them catch anything, but I have heard that it works sometimes.
Happy anniversary!

Keta,
What is Coho Bolo's?
How far up river are we talking and is this a bobber and eggs area? If the river is slow, is there a better river in the area to fish at this time. If so, does my 19' Bayliner still fit the profile? graemlins/1zhelp.gif
P.S. Is the river only Chinook, or are silvers legal?
Jig-N-Bobberman,
A Bolo is a spinner, I dont know who makes them. I've had good luck this year with #5 Blue Foxes in orange or green w/silver blade and a home made spinner rig.
There are lots of fish in the river but they have lock jaw. When we went last time we hooked one and lost it on Friday (06:30-19:00) then on Sat. we hooked and lost one at 06:30 and caught fish through out both incoming tides, 19 total with only two clipped. It took us all of Friday to figure what would make them bite.
The elk viewing area is about 1-1/2 to 2 miles up river, the big bend is 2 miles down river. I have seen drift boats in both places. The last time we were over to Reedsport we watched someone row a wooden drift boat down to the big bend with the out going tide, fish the slack casting, and then row back to Unger's Landing with the incoming tide.
I wouldnt know "good bobber fishing" if it bit me(I want to try it sometime). Silverado might be able to help you there.
Coos Bay and the rivers that feed it are close to reedsport and I would think that the fishing should be good now. Isthmus Slough (south of Coos Bay) would be good for your drift boat with a motor. I would think that eggs and a bobber would work there too. Last year I saw lots of coho jumping in the slough.
You can keep any chinook and fin clipped coho in the Umpqua.

Keta,
Thanks so much for all the information. I'll probably take theh Bayliner Classic, give me a yell if you see me there on Saturday or Sunday. My Bayliner is blue, white and red.
See you on the water. Thanks again.
