I fished on the Yaquina yesterday. Got one 30 pounder. Saw quite a few caught. The bite has really gotten better from what it was last weekend. I pulled out about 3 and my buddy saw quite a few more caught after that.

Ok! I'm new to this fishery! So are you guys fishing in the bay area? And what are you using for bait? Fresh bait, frozen, plugs , spinners, eggs? what is the bait of choice! Are you trolling, parked, or on the bank! I need to know my dad just bought a cabin in newport and want to go fishing! Any help would be a good thing! thanx! ...shakerfish!....

Shakerfish!!!
Welcome to the area and the fishery.
Cut plug herring is the bait of choice in the lower bay and up to Toledo, although some folks use kwik fish, spinners, Blue foxes, and even Wiggle warts. We troll.
When you get up into the river above Toledo, many people use spinners, or bobber fish. Most of this is done out of boats, however, if you can find a place to get down to the water, you can cast a blu fox or bobber fish..
I will be the first to confess I know nothing..I try everything and ask a bunch of questions.
I wouldn't have caught what I have caught this year if it hadn't have been for the info on this web site and the help of my friends.

E-mail me if you have any questions..The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked..

Where do you fish in the lower bay? I crab a lot in the lower bay but haven't noticed anyone fishing, other than jetty fishermen and the usual crowd on the piers. It would be kind of cool to troll while the pots are soaking.
BTW, somebody stole one of my pots a couple of weeks ago. That makes twice in the last year. Is this a problem at Newport? I've never had a problem anywhere else.

Many people like to put in at the airport boat ramp near Toledo and fish up or down stream from there. Have fished there a few times this season and seems to be on again off again from week to week. It seems like the best fishing on this system has been Toledo up. Have picked up some nice fish around the mill creek aera and above Cannon Quarry park, which is on the way from Toledo to Elk City. Upstream from the park has seen some good days for fishing spinners and Kwikfish, have herd that bobber fishing has been fair near Elk city. I usually fish herring with flashers in the lower river up to cannon Quarry launch, above here I perfer spinners or Kwikfish. There is not a whole lot of places to bank fish other than near the parks or along the road. This river is usually a little later than others but has some nice fish.

Lots of bright fish in the upper river now. We started yesterday down low near the Oyster plant and lost a nice nook at the boat. Lots of strikes and released 3 coho at the boat. Saw several coho landed and kept, which of course is a no-no, but there was no enforcement up there to check boats. Grass seems to have cleared up in the lower bay.

Pulled about noon and went back up above Toledo around 3:30 PM. Put one nice hen in the boat about 4 and had several more strikes besides that, all on small plug cuts behind small flashers.

Had a friend yesterday land a 41 lb buck right off the Toledo boat ramp in the channel on a large rainbow spinner at tide change. SD

1pump,

Sorry to hear you lost some crab gear. Are you sure someone took your gear or did the rope get pulled under? If your not familiar with Newport, you can loose pots from excessive seaweed on the line, short rope and strong currents, which happens all the time. For this reason, 60 feet of rope is recommended. Stay out of the shipping channel and don't crab on large tide changes, say over 6 feet of change.

A recipe for trouble, 40 feet of rope, 35 foot depth and 8 to 9 foot tide change equals lost trap.

Of course, someone still may have pinched your trap.

better luck next time,

Gregg

I'm guessing 95% of all presumably stolen traps are actually sunk floats or traps that floated out to sea. I've found several traps bobbing around outside the jaws in the outgoing tide that we brought back in and left on the dock. Many times I had thought my traps got ripped off only to find the floats three feet under the surface. It's good to pick out landmarks when you drop your traps so you can find them again when the tide picks up and they dissappear. Also, having a long extendable boat hook sometimes lets you retrieve them rather than waiting for the tide to slow down and float them again.

Hookset,

I don't think it could've got pulled under. I had 50' of line & a humongous float in 28' feet of water, plus I had 3 other rigs close by that stayed put. It was right in front of the bayfront, so it's possible a commercial or charter boat got tangled up with it, but I wasn't very far away & probably would've seen it happen
Anyway, heading down to Siletz today to catch high tide this pm

did you do any good at crabbing ?

Nope. Just got 2. Another guy put in about the same time (@2:30) & he got 9 right off the bat, but about 2 hours before high slack nobody was getting anything. He was using shad for bait, we were using mink. Shad's the best bait I've ever used but I didn't happen to have any. :depressed: Really crowded, too. You could just about walk from the spit over to Mo's on all the floats. Siletz just isn't producing for me like it was last year with double & triple limits all the time. But I didn't see the pressure then either. The good news is the crabs are all rock hard. Might hit it again in mid-week to avoid the crowd.

For fishing above Toledo is there another boat ramp closer to Elk City, or do you need to put in at the Airport and motor up river?

EZ - Elk City has a nice launch right 'downtown' in the city park.

There's also a small ramp right by the road about halfway between Toledo and Elk City

Thanks blubeast! You may see me out there by Elk City tomorrow if I can swing it. EZ
