Sturgeon, Halibut and Trapping Meetings to Be Held Next Week

PORTLAND - Members of the public are invited to attend four public meetings in October to give their input on Columbia River sturgeon management, halibut sport fishery proposals and best management practices for trapping.

Lower Columbia River Sturgeon Management

Oregon and Washington sturgeon managers are hosting two public meetings to discuss sturgeon management for 2003 through 2005. The current management plan expires in December.

Meetings are scheduled for 6 - 9 p.m.:
-Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, Vancouver, Washington;
-Monday, Oct. 21, at the Astoria Seafood Center, 2021 Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon.

At the meetings, biologists will present the latest findings on the lower Columbia River sturgeon population size and harvestable number. Possible quota and allocations between sport and commercial seasons will be discussed. Fishery managers are interested in hearing from members of the public on ideas for sturgeon fishing regulations in the coming years. Results of the public meetings will be presented, along with staff recommendations, to both the Oregon and Washington fish and wildlife commissions in December. The commissions will take additional public testimony at their December meetings on the 2003-05 sturgeon plan. More information may be found on ODFW's Web site: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/meeting_schedule/october/october11.htm under Exhibit J.

Halibut Sport Fishery

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks input on three proposals for 2003 halibut seasons. A public meeting will be held 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Fireside Room (Room 9) of the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

The proposals call for:
-Increased in-season management to move recreational fishery quota between sub-areas along the Oregon coast,
-Extending the recreational fishery season south of Cape Falcon, and
-Amending the season names in the catch sharing plan.

Questions or comments on the proposals should be directed to Don Bodenmiller at (541) 867-0300, Ext. 223.

Best Management Practices for Trapping

A task force appointed by the 2001 Legislature to review best management practices for trapping will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Conference Room 357, Oregon State Capitol, 900 Court Street N.E., Salem. The task force is studying trapping practices used in other states, and those developed by the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The review may result in recommendations to amend Oregon's trapping regulations. Members of the public will have an opportunity to testify. ODFW staff members serve as advisors to the task force.
