Public meeting scheduled Tuesday night to discuss sturgeon fishing reductions in 2003
A public meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, to discuss sport and commercial Columbia River sturgeon management for 2003 through 2006.
It's no secret that white sturgeon numbers in the Columbia River between the coast and Bonneville Dam are declining.
Officials from Washington and Oregon say sport and commercial catches need to be reduced, and Tuesday's meeting will begin discussion how that might be accomplished.
In September, the Vancouver Wildlife League voted for a 25 percent reduction of the overall sturgeon harvest to 37,500 with 7,500 for the commercial fleet and 30,000 for sportsmen.
Washington's Fish and Wildlife Commission will make its policy decisions on sturgeon management Dec. 6 and 7 in Mount Vernon. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will decide Dec. 13 while meeting in Eugene.
