View Full Version : Bank fishing spot for a youngster?

I was planning on taking my 6 year old nephew fishing tomorrow, but couldn't think of a spot to go that has easy bank access.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a place to take him around the Portland area? I'd sure like to get him into his first salmon =). (not to mention I'd sure like to get one too, hehe).
Thanks in advance,
Matt

If you were a member, I'd set you up. We'll be on the Clack tomorrow, if you wanted to join. Otherwise I'd be looking towards the Sandy at Cedar Creek.

RR- I wasn't suggesting that the child join bhut rather the adult. OFC policy allows members to take kids fishing as often and whenever they desire. I simply offered a secure, easy access, high quality fishing possibility. I was not trying to be mean or nasty. Just the opposite, and I believe my public access tip was a good one. Give a little slack.

Ha Matt sounds like the guy was offering to take you and the youngster out on a sample fishing trip.
Now that I read it again it sounds more like a tease. If you were looking for payed fishing access I am sure you would have asked. Did Brine send you a personal E mail including the info he offered up on ifish so everyone could see the plug for Oregon Fishing Club.
Just wanted to point out a fact no anger here

If you don't mind a little crowd take the youngster up to Herman Creek. I know this place has a bad reputation with snaggers but there is a lot of fish up there and believe it or not they will bite. I have had my best luck with a small black corky pinned at the hook with a small chunk of roe on about a 24" leader of 10#. There is a ton of fish up there right now so don't set the hook unless your sure you have a solid take, otherwise you will behind hook them. Most of the fish are silvers right now but there are still a few steelhead and some nookies running around so be prepared. Anyways, good luck and I hope the kid gets into some fish.

If you happen to come down our way and have the kid and two rods with you, bring two lawn chairs, a couple of stout windbreakers, sandwiches and a thermos, and go up Highway 58 through Dexter. Turn left at the Lowell Covered Bridge. You'll see the parking lot, right there on the reservoir causeway, fishing can be good on either side, but don't throw your bait and bobber over the power lines or the kid will laugh himself silly at ya. Fifty people could be there and you could still find a spot that doesn't feel crowded. Best bites tend to be to the right of the wooden bridge, facing west, in a gentle rain with an east breeze. For a westerly I go over to the other side, down out of the wind. Most people there are powerbait/dropper rigged, but I have done ok with a bobber setup set to seven feet, and once even limited with a Little Cleo, which kind of surprised me. They are stocking several times each spring, the again twice every October. The spring rainbows grow to about 12-13 inches and give you a good fight in the fall, as stockers go, and as holdovers they grow up a bit bigger, 16-18 inches but by then they are hook shy and hard to argue into your net.
In warm weather, though, it's almost all *********. Maybe a puny bass now and then, too.
There's another fish here, looks like rainbow but smaller head, no iridescence, same dark spots on green background but whiter underneath, vestigial teeth, deeply forked tail. Tend to be small. Taste ok. Anybody know what these are? Illustrations of whitefish look kind of like them; if that's what they are, I don't mind catching 'em, regardless of their reputation with some people. I've seen only one bull trout here, 19 inches, and it wasn't like these.

not trying to ( p ) on any ones shoes here,
but i am getting kind of tied of seeing the plugs for the oregon fishing club on here.
i did a search on some peoples posts and it seems that that's all they post about.
if someone slams your club fine post . but please don't just look for a reason to get some free advertising.
the club, good ,or bad??.. i have my thoughts both ways.i am just getting tired of seeing the plugs.
done venting thanks

I wonder if someday only the rich will be able to fish from the bank. The rest of us from a boat??????

There's not many places to take a 6 year old and do some productive salmon fishing from the bank right now IMHO. Unfortunately without water, many places this time of year can become infested with "snaggers" . Those folks set horrible examples for the young folks. If you can get downstream from some of those guys, away from the commotion, you may find a biter or two.
Herman creek might be a little hard for the little guy to get around, but does offer a few bank spots without wading. You might try the Upper Sandy, plenty of reports on here about some fish in that area. Where ever you go have fun together.
Now something that bugs me :
Seems to me the only time someone complains about free advertising is when it's about the OFC.  This was well whined about on another thread graemlins/icon_argue.gif
Boats, lines, rods, reels, heaters, seats, lures, hooks, swivels, baits, scents, periodicals, guides.....they all get discussed here, and some of those outfits as a result receive indirect "free advertising"....That's life on a bulletin board.
Get over it and fish....... ...In water, not just on your monitors. graemlins/idea.gif
Don't worry Dan, you didn't get any on my shoes
Once again, OFC not a rich person only thing. LOTS AND LOTS of families are members. It is very affordable to the average person.
Now ,let's pound some fish !!!

chris
the ( p ) wasn't directed at you shoes.
your 566 posts show you add to the discussion and info here on the board.and in no way did i say the club was bad,i didn't say it was good either.
im just saying that i don't see a need for plugging a club ( fishing or hunting ) when someone is asking where he might take a young one.
if i asked where i should take my son duck hunting i bet no one would plug there private duck club.that was my point.
another thing
Get over it and fish <font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">when are you going to take me down the river in that new little boat of yours???

Mad Wiz-
Pick a day ( preferably during the week), pick a species, and we'll go. Plenty of fish to fill a freezer around.
Funny thing, even tho mine is a fish -rite, it looks an awful lot like your drift boat, all the way down to the color.
Let's whack' em
