View Full Version : I need a new rod!!

I need a new rod (hey, don't we all!!). I've felt pretty under-gunned lately throwing spinners at PC. I use a Lami Kenai Special (8.5', 10-25lb rating) with a 6500 C4, 25lb Maxima UG. It throws a spinner with 1oz of lead really nice, no problem hitting the far bank if I wanted to....thought about bouncing one of Bugflicker's boat to wake his wife up   .

Anyway, it just doesn't have the "horsing" backbone that I want (and need) to fish there. I use a Lami Certified Pro Salmon Moocher (9', 12-30 rating) for bobber fishing and plunking corkies. It's definitely got more oomph, but it's longer than I like for throwing spinners.

Thinking about one of the Berkeley 7'10" beefsticks, also thought about one of the same size NorthRiver rods at FMO. Do need a fairly limber tip, though, so I can still chuck a spinner with "light" lead nicely. I suppose another option would be one of the Lami Hotshot rods??

Help me here, I'm sure there's gotta be a few opinions!!

BTW, I want one by Saturday, so I can't have TH build me one....maybe next year!!

So you say you need a new rod for tossing spinners? Is that right?
The Lamiglas model G 1313-T Mag Taper, line WT is 10-20, 8 foot 6 inches.
Or the Lamiglas model G 1300-T Magnum Taper, 7 foot 6 inches with a line WT of 8-15.
Both rods are the same, other then ones longer then the other.
I have the Magnum Taper and it work good for tossing spinners and much more.
I just like the 8 foot 6 inch rods better.
Just my 2 cents

Yup, just for spinners, for BIG fish. Need something with a lot of backbone, yet a light enough tip to make casting easy!!!

OOOOpppssssss..... (shameless  )

Rods, dang it Rick, rods......

If you like it and it catches fish, $19.95 or hundreds of bucks, that's all that matters. I have a couple of Loomis rods, but that's really because I never had to pay full price for them, back a few years. The 17-40 BBR has been a meat stick too, when required.

Ugly Stick has some nice looking Salmon and Steelhead rods. From fishing oversize Sturgeon, I can tell you they don't break, as advertised. As you probaby already know, you will break a graphite, long before you would ever break this one.

Hope you find something you like and feels right, whatever you get.

I agree with ****** you can't go wrong with an Ugly Stix. I have a pair that are rated at 10 to 25 I think. They are one peice rods with lots of back bone and real sensitive tips. The best part is you can get them for about 30 dollars. I have fought and landed Chinook to 50 lbs and Sturgeon in excess of 6 feet (well maybe not landed just up next to the boat to unhook them). I have never had to chase these fish. The rods have enough back bone I can hoarse them in where I am at. One of the rods I have had so long I had to replace the guides (over ten years). I have over ten thousand dollars in gear and can not say enough good things about Shakspear Ugly Stix's. I have Lamiglass, Berkley, Diawa, Fenwick, Abu Garcia, LCI, Eagle Claw and Phluger rods and I am sure I have missed some. The reason I know how much gear I have is I have an invetory in Quicken that tells me the exact value. I mention this only to say I have used a few different rods not to brag.

Can't go wrong with the Ugly Stik, with a couple caveats though. I've got 4 of them, all one piece in the 7ft range. I've caught Sturgeon from 8-13ft on the heaviest one and they can take a beating. But you mention needing a rod to throw spinners and I'm not so sure the Ugly Stik would be the best choice. I recently bought one of the NorthRiver 15-40 rods at FMO for bobber fishing, and it would do a great job for what you're looking for. It's got plenty of backbone and won't set you back an arm and a leg. I paid 69 on sale at FMO for it.

I have recently got my first "Rogue" to compliment my aresonal of Lami rods. Wow, it is the KIND! I love it and will eventually thin out my Lami glass (i think?). Anywho, I needed a backup and went to Gi Joes and found NorthbyNorthwest rods on sale for $34.99. I picked up a 8'2" spinning setup to go with a heavy Abu so if my wife ever "really" decides to go she won't have an excuse. Since, North Northwests are GI Joes brand they will replace for life of rod! I agree about the Uglies though, I have one 8'6" medium spin cast I use for inexperienced fisherpersons as diver and bait or plug rods. Wow, it has a ton of action and soaks up all the fish even in fast water on the Santiams. My stugeon rod is also an ugly and it is awesome.

I have to concur on the Ugly Sticks.
I have a couple of Ugly Stick "Lite" rods, 8'6" medium action. They work great for Coho with a 1 ounce banananana sinker and a #3 or #4 spinner. The rods load up real nice and you can chuck it quite a ways. They are fun to fish.
I even drift fish with them sometimes but they kind of lack the sensitivity I like for steelhead.
I think the heavy or medium heavy Salmon Steelhead rod is what you are looking for.
I let the kids fish with these, let them bang around in the back of my truck, they get alot of abuse but still keep on afishin. For an all around unbreakable, strong (so far for three years) rod, Ugly Sticks will get my vote.

Ugly stix are good for the many reasons everyone has mentioned . I am happy with the couple I have used. In the future I am expanding my collection of them .
