What is back trolling? I just started to fish with my dad out of his boat. I have always been a bank/drift fisherman. Can someone explain how to back troll?

Think about the fish downstream from you. They are facing into the current, and your goal is to slowly float down river, lowering your lures into his face to pi$$ him off. Basically, you put your rods in the holders facing downstream from you, and let out 20 yards or so of line. Use your oars or kicker to ALMOST hold yourself in place while the current is trying to push you downstream. The end result is your boat and lures moving very slowly downstream into the path of fish.

Back trolling is usually done with divers. Usually divers and plugs or divers and bait. Typically, you set up with your bow upstream and with the aid of your kicker motor, very slowly allow your boat to drift backward. You motor keeps you from free drifting with the current. Up at the dam, where there is plenty of room, many of the boats will slowly work backwards in a zig zag motion. This allows you to cover lots of water.

Tip of the Rod,
For steelhead I like to get my drifter as close to the bank as possible. I mark on all my lines at 50' for my plug rods. The main idea is like a hogline to keep all the bait in the strike zone but in a line so the go left or right they find another. I think that is the key for anything you backbounce for. I like to us Hot-n-tots for my divers.

Biggest thing to remember when back trolling is to go as slow as possible, like a snails pace. Most beginner's just blow thru the hole or slot.
