Yesterday Fishalot and I went to a new secret spot for a little Coho scouting. Luckily I have to say I went home with two hens. Fishalot , well he was there.
But I did encounter a difficult situation. I hooked a dark fish that exploded out of the hole and out around a rock island about 6 feet in diameter and then slipped down the rapids into the next pool below. My precious (under 100 yds) of line was trapped around the undercut of the island. I didn't want to break off the line that was slowly leaving my reel. I looked at my feet and spotted a single piece of wood about 2"x6" and 16 inches long. I picked it up peeled off some line and did a few wraps around the piece of wood. I then flipped open my bail and tossed the piece of wood towards the other side of the water. Keeping my line loose I let the piece of wood float pass by the opposite side of the troublesome island as my line unravelled off the wood. Soon the line was off the wood and I was back on a direct line to the fish. That nasty dark fish was released successfully and I got my line and tackle back.
