Hey all. I just got home from 5 days on the Nehalem. Very slow fishing for me morning to night with 1 native Coho caught.

Anyways I have had a hell of time with my cut plug herring I'am not sure if I'am cutting it wrong or just using the hooks wrong when i thread it anyone know a link or have any advice on a proper way to thread and cut a herring for trolling. I obviously have the wrong everything going on. Thanks a bunch all good luck out there will be on the siletz for a few days so thought i would give the cut plug another shot if I can get some help. Looks like we some good tides coming up so hopefully this will bring in some fresh fish because the rain thing Does not look good

On a side note I fished the siletz this morning and I saw 9 or 10 fish caught upriver from Chinook bend and In front of Chinook bend Rv park. Down river bye coyote rock was slow. All the fish I saw caught were still bright and big.

Getting the right roll can be frustrating. It's discussed often here, search the archives for past threads with lots of good info.

An alternative is to use a Rotary-Salmon-Killer type (there's several brands) bait holder.

Why bang your head fishing the Nehalem and Siletz - Tillamook where's it's at right now.

Regarding Nehalem, did you try spinners and bobbers in the upper tidewater, especially the N.Fk? It's a virtual quarantee those silvers are piling up there -- they can be difficult, but you'll be fishing over fish.

I work nights at Spirit Mountain. Stop by and have security call for Greg (slot Tech). Have at least one bait thawed, a plug cutter, and a mooching rig. I'll run outside and show ya how to rig one. I'm here from 2000hrs - 0600 Mon night through Fri morn.

You may want to get a Gilly cutter. If nothing else there are some pretty good instructions in there on how to cut and hook placement. For what it's worth,if you ever get a chance with a guide(on any newer tech-new to you)go.It will save you big bucks in the long run and get you into fish sooner. After a good bud showed me what a herring looks like in many different spins I can do it myself because I know what I am looking for.Without that HUGE building block,I was spinning my wheels(herring?).While I am a long ways from great at it I am better than I would ever been without the help.
Good Luck.
