I have a 89 - 8 hr and 50 to 1 is what I use , the older motors are 50 to 1 then there are the 100 to 1 in the newer ones. The 50 to 1 is safe way to go.

wow, I would be surprised if the 100:1 was a spec unless it was a synthetic ?? 50:1 is basically safe but I would be careful going any leaner unless I read it and understood what oil was intended.
I have raced 2 strokes for years, too much oil and you run the risk of oil fouling your plug and creating a mosquito fogger. However too little oil can be bad as well, too little oil and you reduce your compression seal (eg peformance) and you are also reducing the oil available to lube the engine parts, bearing etc...
Also, your carburation can be affected because you will be richening out the carb process Fuel:Air. Less oil means more fuel per gram being mixed with Air, which ultimately means you are running rich(er) in your Fuel mixture.....
call inflateable boat center on Powell. My 96 6hp yamaha is 100 to 1, and I think yamaha made some mercs but don't know what year...Roger

I've got two mercs (9.9's) one that vintage and one newer. They are both 50:1, but the dealers will recommed you use 100:1 if you are trolling with them. Mine recommended it after Ihad to pay to have the exhaust tube replaced. It was plugged solid with oil/carbon residue after a couple 100 hrs.

You can do that on the little motors with the 100 to 1. Just dont try it on the big boys or you will hear "clinkkkka" "grind" and then nothing.

Run 50:1 if:
You don't mind changing plugs after each use.
You don't mind it not starting if it dies during the day.
You like the smell of the blue fog it puts out. :hoboy:
Never a problem since switching to 100:1. My $.02

I learn something new everyday graemlins/idea.gif .... 100:1 still scary to me, but I have been around the bigger jugs for a long time quarter liter! Size does matter I guess
