What is the correct direction of rotation for a herring rig, clockwise or counter clockwise. And why?

North of the Equator it's always clockwise...  graemlins/program.gif

Depends on whether you're Sorth or South of the equator.   Or in your case, I see you're from NY so I guess it's a West coast vs. East coast thing.

Jeez, we're a tough crowd!  I'm heading down to T-Bay tomorrow night for 12 days of fishing, will let you know when I get back which rotation works best!

it depends on the water temp....

It does not really matter, as long as its spinning correctly

I guess it really doesn't matter. It depends on if you are left-handed or right-handed. The dominant hand will lay the fish to plug or will hook the whole to the dorsal side (usually). I think that has more to do with it than clockwise or counter-clockwise.

so what do you guys think is the correct spin? do you like the small tight spin? or the big swooping spi n?

Are you trying to catch tight left handed chinook or big lazy right handed chinook?

i think it depends on the day of the week. Some days i do good with a slow troll and a slow lazy spin other i have good luck with a fast troll and a helicopter tail spin.no kidding.

i start slow troll with a slow loose spin,if nothing is going on i go to a tighter spin ,if still nothing i speed up the troll with a quick spin.

I'm working on a set-up that will cause my herring to loop-de-loop. I still have a few wrinkles to iron out, but figure it should knock em dead.

If you can get it the slow spiral that hesitates is pretty good. Only problem is that if you slow down your kicker just a little more it becomes the dead fish not spinning roll.

Don't be afraid to change speed, turn if possible and change the action of your herring rigs. I can't count how many times the first fish of the day was just one drunken sailor troll turn away.

Seems like the bait is always going clockwise too.

I forgot the mention, that is when your looking at the head of the bait from the back of the boat. Now which direction would it spin. Most gadgets made of plastic or metal, spin counter clockwise when looking at the head from the back of your boat. There has to be a reason that the manufacturers make them to spin this way. Seems that being north or south of the equator would have something to do with it. I read something a few years ago about the rotation of the spin of a dying baitfish and remember something like 90 percent rotate counter clockwise. Can anyone confirm this? And no it's not an east coast west coast thing. Anybody know where I can order on-line, one of those herring plug cutting thingys? Never saw one before. Also did anyone here ever use those Action Discs from WiggleFin I think it is? I read on another board they gave some away for people to try out.

I can attest that I have cut them both ways and caught fish both ways. I don't think the salmon know or care if the herring is damaged on the left side or the right. Remember, a salmon brain is about the size of a pea. Don't give them more credit than they are due.

" A salmon has the brain the size of a pea"
Boy that sure makes us look bad

It may be the size of a pea but it can process sense inputs about bazillion (that's a lot) times faster then we can.

Also, their brains are not contaminated with irrelevant thinking such as the liberal propaganda spouted by Al Gore in San Francisco. :hoboy:

You guys crack me up big time ! Now come on give the guy the TRUTH !!
Everyone knows it all depends on if the herring is left finned or right finned which can be determined by looking at the two lower left or right fins, the bigger fin will determine on if the fish is left or right finned !
Now the TRUTH is known.....Big Dave.
