I just got into the whole salmon/steelhead fishing this year and I am hooked!! My parents are coming for a visit around Oct 20 or so and I want to take my dad fishing for fall chinook. I was wondering if I should get a day trip with a guide or just bank it with some of my salmon fishin buddies?? I have never been on a guide'ed trip and was wondering how much a day trip would be on the Nehalem or one of the other coastal rivers? Or would I have just as good of a chance fishing without a guide on the bank. Any help on this would be great!!! Thanks ifishers!

If you're just getting into it, and taking someone else, save up your money!!! Pay close attention, what you will learn from a good guide will more than pay for itself in the long run.

Most guided trips run in the neighborhood of $150 per fisherman. A guide is an excellent way to learn a new body of water or a new technique.
If you are having sucess fishing with your buddies, take your dad along. If not, book a trip with a good guide and have a trip to remember.

Don't wait too long to try and get a guide booked! :depressed:
Guides can help boost your odds of getting fish, but if you have fun fishing, consider taking your Dad to do what you enjoy and know. I've done both with my Dad ... but my greatest memory is of a fishless trip to the Deschutes. We had such a good time together. By contrast, a once in a lifetime guided trip resulted in my catching 8 fish, including a 9 pound 7 ounce rainbow - all on flies. But my Dad went fishless that day. It took all the wind out of my sail on what should have been a day to celebrate.

Hire a guide. Book the trip now. Tillamook.
Even if you are doing ok with your buddies, a guide earns his money by putting you into fish when your buddies can't. He does this by being tuned into the fish and the season through years of experience.
Minimize the things that can go wrong. Give your Dad something to tell his buddies about, "my son took me fishing with a guide ". You won't regret it.
