View Full Version : Boat down Nehalem 9/23?, Any info??
I've heard from a friend, who fished Nehalem jaws yesterday that perhaps a boat capsized in the area. He said there was a rescue,(helicopter, rescue seadoos etc.), but didn't know the results. Does anyone have any confirmed information? I hope it was just a drill. He was back to the dock, by the time he saw the emergency vehicles.

Curiosity got the best of me  . I called the Astoria C.G. and was told the rescue effort was in response to a 20 foot pleasure craft, taking on water in the area of the mouth of the Nehalem. The coastie said the boat in distress was able to make it to port under it's own power. No harm, no foul, glad everyone was OK.

Red,
So Dr. Wo was spreading rumors, eh?
Good to know no one was seriously hurt, he was concerned...
He also told me they had a very good day fishing down there in the jaws. 2 over 35 and others too in their boat.
Sounds a lot better than sitting in 107 in Phoenix! :depressed:
Hogmaster,
You obviously know AWOR, are you sure of the fishin' report?????

Here's from an email he sent me:
"Got two beauties each today mouth of the Nehalem. It's been good there for 3-4 days/ Two were over 35"
Still say that sounds a lot better than down here in Phoenix. Gotta get home - Even Jennie gets to fish before me :depressed: :depressed:
PS - Nope, don't know him

The (guessing here- 100 ft )dredge ship that moors upriver past Nehalem was entering the bay with about 50 boats fishing the jaws and just inside the bay. Most of the boats inside the bay headed to the north side thinking he would be hugging the deep channel on the south side.
For future reference to all, he came pretty much down the center of the bay leaving plenty of room on the south side near the rocks if one wanted to just hang out along the jetty in the event you are out there when it happens again.
From my perspective it appeared that a couple of boats, the sled that swamped and another one that took on alot of water were paying more attention to the position of the ship than they were the position of their boats and before ya know it they had drifted? motored? or whatever into the breakers on the north side of the bay.
Both boats took on some pretty good water on the first breaker to get them. It appeared the sled that was in the most trouble had lost power at this point and the other boat powered out of the surf quickly with no further problems.
The operator of the sled at this point left his tiller to put on his PFD and took another breaker over his bow. He then returned to his motors and was able to fire one of them and and head his boat upriver through the shallow breaking waters being paralled by to other crafts that were there in case he experienced any more troubles.
By the time the emergency vehicles, heliocopter, and coast guard vessels arrived he was in calm waters across from the Jetty Fishery bailing his boat with a 5 gallon bucket.
After seeing boats in trouble at least once every year over there folks ...please...if you fish the Nehalem keep an eye on your location with reguards to the north side of that bay and also avoid that shoal that rises up outside the bay on the south side about 1/2 way out to the bouy.
I'm gettin too darn old for all this excitement :depressed:
