Madwizard, I use a small 2 gallon propane tank that works well. I have a small burner that attaches to it that you can find at GI Joe's or Fisherman's. It will burn for approximately 8 hours of solid use and is still small enough to not get in the way for the person who nets my fish!

Good Luck, hope this helps.

I have a coleman I got as a gift, It has a fan built in and runs of disposable cylinders. the fan runs off d cell batts. I use it in my sled. Im sure you can find em a joes, bi mart, even fred myers had em. It works well for me.

Im sure you can find em on colemans web site too.

It has a wide bottom and has never gotten knocked over.. Might be an idea..

This has a couple of thumbnails that should give you an idea of what you're looking to do.

I find that it is most simple just to replace the boat with a Willie that has a heater in it, already.

In that willie photo is seems the heater is touching or pointing right at the drift cross member, which probably has Zolotone on it. Can Zolotone stand up to 12,000BTU those heaters put out?

Madwizerd, I use a 3 lb custom tank (It's low to the ground so won't tip) that I mounted under the rowers seat. From there I run two seperate hoses under the raised floor of my Alumaweld into 2 mounted heaters 1 on each side of the boat. I just made a custom mount that I slip inside my pole holders for the heaters by using some long bolts and hose clamps. It works well and is out of the way.

MADWIZERD, I'm in the process of doing the same thing to my DB. When i went to the local propane store to buy some hose to run under the floor, they told me i could only run up to a 12' length of hose. If i was to use anything longer then i would have to use one of the heaters that uses the disposable cylinders. I don't know if this is bad or good, but it might influence the choice of heater you buy. Myself i chose to run a 12' hose only to use a heater i already had. My tank is mounted directly in back of the rowers seat. Strapped to some braces i had fabbed on. Hope this helps

Dr Wiz,
we put one of the heaters that you can cook on (mr heater brand I think)under the front deck.Same head as the standard Mr. Heater, just slides onto a metal tube bracket they give to ya for about the same price as regular model.Your rod holders need to move to the rail where they belong. Not for the rod holders' sake, as much as the 300 dollar Loomis sitting in the rod holder. We run either a 1 or 2 1/2 gallon tank on a 8-12 foot hose that we thread thru the boat to the heater .Tank sits somewhere around the oarsman.
Thought about a permanent mount, but the thing is just in the way for 5 months of the year.Been in another Willie that had the blower in it.It was nice. But not nice enough to justify the cost!Once the front deck gets good and hot the hot air boils out of there right onto your cold toes.Besides that, now that we got the heater/cooker we make cider, and hot toddies(not for me,I'm driving)when we feel like it.
For what it's worth, don't try this in a glass boat.Makes 'em bubble  .

Mad wiz,
Something to think about is a heat plate under your front deck if you are mounting the heater under there. A flat piece of aluminum to absorb the heat and disperse it before it overheats your deck and boils your buddy's fishing eggs is a good idea. A ton of heat shoots right out of the top of those heaters instead of straight out and it can get pretty hot in a hurry without it. I just used a 12 x14" piece of 1/4" aluminum with a right angle bend in one end that I bolted to the underside about 3 inches from the front deck. This way that plate heats up and prevents the top deck from getting too hot...Just an idea. Maybe steelhead and salmon like their eggs scrambled  in which case ignore this tip.

Why not just buy a wood drift boat

No feet frozen to the floor, and if you get too cold, you just pull up on a gravel bar, and light it on fire........weinies or marshmellows anyone?

Actually, I have a little wood drifter. Nice and warm in the winter. But hey, I'm the one rowing, so I stay warm.

Hey Wiz....

Just received my Century heater/cooker today. Model #2317. Runs off the disposable bottles or a bigger tank.

Granted, it's not built in, and granted, my boat is not a drifter, but after firin' it up this afternoon, it certainly looks like it'll toast a significant amount of airspace. And since it's on a steel tube frame, it'd be easy to attach in almost any boat. Just a thought......

Got mine at www.Ballystore.com (http://www.Ballystore.com) for $49....

Good luck with the search...... Tim

Madman,
of course he stays warm.Labs never get cold. The smell of burning dog hair also is a fine fish attractant. It is also handy for clearing out those busy holes on the Wilson and Trask.Just lite the dog up and away they go!Oh sorry,I wanted to say heater not dog.It is a funny story though.Sad but true.
Have a fun hunt.
