I have a family of five and the only thing that gets me off the beach is a 10" Don Hill Mini-Drifter I built five years ago. I run it with a 3Hp Minn Kota and I works OK for trolling or lake fishing (unless there's any wind) It works OK for bouncing down the Clackamas or Necanicum. The main problem is it only carries two. My other problem is this boat I can either haul on a small utility trailer (that doubles with the sides put up to haul stuff), or I can carry it on a rack on top of my tent trailer. What I'd like to be able to do is carry more people, be able to handle more wind, and still be able to store it/ haul it with what I have. I would give up the ability to drift to get these things. It sounds like I need either one of those folding boats? or a 12' aluminum boat? would some kind of inflatible work. It sounds like the boat dilemma is the same as the car dilemma-- we want them bigger on the inside and smaller on the outside. The chance of me convincing my wife to park her car in the rain so we can have a bigger boat in her spot is nil. Any suggestions???

My boat fits in my bath tub. Barbie likes it really well. But it isn't even big enough for Ken. :depressed:

It is an old tuperware boat. No kidding. Inside the boat, I could fit a pint and the little men that sat in the lid... if you turned them upside down, they were the perfect shot glass.

My suggestion...
Either get a bigger boat with a good cover for storage or get an inflatable that carries several people.

I have two boats the one I use on small lakes is a 12 foot achilles inflatable now 12 years old. The nice thing about an inflatable is the weight the boat is rated at holding. I believe it is about a 1,000 pounds thats pretty good for a boat that you the air out of and folds up into a bag. I trailer mine so that i dont have to pump it up all the time. It takes about 30 minutes to drag it out of the bag and pump it up and be out fishing other wise. Very stable boat You do not have to worry about tipping it over you can stand on the side of it and it still wont flip. Now the biggest down fall is when the weather is cold and waters get a little rough plan on getting wet. I was out fishing salmon in about 3-4 foot waves and your bottom side will get soaked and cold. But was never worried bout being to rough. I also have a 25hp yamaha 2 stroke on it with a trolling plate to slow the boat down to speed when fishing. This boat flat gets up and moves it will pull a knee boarder no problem. It can be totally scary when at full throtle and hitting a big wave you can get air bourne. It will take a lot of abuse like jumping ferry boat wakes witch is alot of fun till your buddy sees his wallet sliding off the edge of the boat. Which brings up another down fall the round pontoons like to work your wallet out of your pocket so I bring along a zip lock and throw it in the ice chest. I have had five guys in my boat and no problems no chance of fishing not enough room. just taxing them to other side of lake to fish off the shore. Never had a air leak they make them really good. this is my second inflatable the other being a zodiak and slightly smaller no air leaks with it either. They will over time develope water leaks in the floor but those can easily be patched. Hope this helps and I could go alot longer about the inflatable and the pros and cons. If you or anyone would like more info or have a ? let me know I will see if I can help

Whopper Stopper- my problem too! Way too many tools in the garage that was built in 1924 for cars of that era . Also it was before we had those cool power tools to keep locked up. It sounds like you might have a tool problem too if you built a Don Hill. The driveway will not hold I the boats and vehicles. The smaller boat means you can be selective on who you do take. It is not always possible to get everyone in the boat at once so we share and take turns. However I always go out to make sure everyone is fishing correctly.

******- nice boat!
Pete -nice picture!

*** and Fishabonus- Ha ha ha ... I heard it that the new Divorced Barbie got the house, boat, car, Jeep, and all that Ken got were his clothes!

Suggest you checkout the Lodge version from Sylvan/Smokercraft. Lightweight to tow, fairly good freeboard, should carry most of your family. Being metal... it will survive outside just fine with a tarp.

Maybe I should look for one of those amphibious cars. It would have a seat for everybody but probably not tow my trailer. Maybe a small fleet of pontoon boats. I could just stack them three or four high on top of my Suburban. graemlins/eek13.gif What I need to do is convince my best buddy to split a boat with me and store it at his house! Does the split-a-boat idea work? Or does it ruin friendships?

"Split a boat" only works if it is a Boston Whaler

If we would of had a boat, and I got it, I wouldn't be complaining a bit! I wish I was as lucky as Barbie.... but reality is I got the 3 kids, all the responsibilities, and all the bills too.

So, in the meantime, until I get that debt paid off (another 3 years) I am boat less, even tho I have plenty of places to park one under cover.

I already have in mind what it will be too.

 Mels boat is way too big for a first boat. You have to graduate up to one of those. That will be my second boat.
