I was talking to my dad last night and he tells me he was fishing the umpqua for Bass. He was not catching too many bass but he noticed salmon going up the swift water only about 10-15 feet from him. Every once in a while one of the salmon would (half-heartedly) go for his little 1 1/2 in jig.
Well, of course eventually one of those big boys took the bait!
This wouldn't have been too bad but he was using an ultra-light spinning reel and 4 pound test line!!
He fought the chinook (which was approx. 25-30 pounds) for 20 minutes and actually got it within 5 feet of shore before it decided to take one last run and broke the line.
The fish was pretty dark anyway and he didn't even have a net with him.
All I can say is what a battle on ultralight tackle!!
