I've been watching this bulletin board for the past month or so and finally decided to register and say hello. I'm a very novice fisherman and mostly out trying to learn the ropes. I fished some as a kid, but never had much luck (I didn't have the best teacher - sorry dad). I picked up an old 'snoopy' rod this spring and started doing some trout fishing this summer for the first time in years and really enjoyed it. I went out on the ocean for salmon back in early August on a charter boat and had a blast.
Now that I've discovered I really enjoy fishing, I'm trying to learn how to fish for steelhead and salmon in local rivers (from the bank). I recently picked up a basic steelhead rod/reel from Fishermans and started learning some basic techniques. No luck yet, so I doubt I'm doing things right, or may not be in the right location, but I'll keeping learning and trying new things. Living in Oregon City, the Clackamas is only a few minutes away, so that's my river of choice right now.
I don't have very many good fish tales, but here's an embarrasing moment from earlier this summer. I was camping on the upper McKenzie River and doing some fishing at Carmen Res. I think it must have been stocked fairly recently since there were quite a few people there catching fish. I hooked a 16-18 inch rainbow. A little kid saw the fish as I pulled it up on the bank and started yelling "look at that fish". So with several people watching, I take out the hook and go to lift up the fish to show it off. All of sudden, the fish spasms and jerks out of my hand. Splash! The fish was in the water and gone before I had time to say, "oh *#^@!!!"
Lesson learned: never show off your fish until it's been strung up or bonked a good one... :>
