On the Salmon Saturday, I was fortunate enough  to get to hear the misfortunes of one enterprising man. It seems that he has taken to advertising as a "Fishing Instructor". That is...he hires on, at a 2-hour minimum, to teach the ins and outs of fishing. He asks the customer what they'd like to target, has them buy the gear that he reccomends, then sits down with them and goes through everything. How to rig, how to cast, how to set the hook, how to land a fish, etc., etc.....

He supplies none of the gear, and states up front in his literature and by statement that he is NOT a guide. He recently accepted an invitation by one of his "customers" to head out on the ocean and catch a fish or two. When he got back to the dock, people started asking questions....and word surfaced about his "teaching". One thing lead to another, and he ended up with a citation for guiding without a license. Court date is coming soon.

Opinions???

BTW, anyone who's fished the Salmon and PC knows this guy, he's about 6-4, 250+, blond hair and beard, with a voice that carries about a mile. He has the nickname of "Bear". I won't post his name.

I know him all too well from PC. VERY loud and VERY opinionated about how he fishes. I have no idea how they could get him for guiding if he was a guest on someone elses boat. Were they paying him for the time they were on the water? That would be the only thing I could think of. If he was being paid to show them the ropes while out on the water the thats pretty much the same as a guide in my eyes. However if he was only being paid for the time he spent at his house or theirs showing them how to do the stuff on their own and then just going out and fishing with them I dont see much of a case.

It will be very interesting to hear the outcome of this and see what the judge says.

If you are paid for services or advertise said services, you have to have a licence.Guiding, practicing law, construction, you name it.They all have an arm(s)of the government that watches them and keeps em honest(as honest as the gov can keep a fisherman  ).If you try to do business without paying your fees,Uncle sam will find you and have a talk with you.
Ever hear of Al Capone??

Just to add to what I said previously. If he indeed broke the law in doing what he did then by all means he deserves to have the book thrown at him.

Watch out for this guy. I've seen him many times. He is dangerous.

I was fishing the hospital hole in Tillamook around 1991, and got there two hours before daylight, because I wanted a particular "spot". About an hour later, this same guy shows up. He starts shouting loud enough to wake up everyone within 2 miles, "Who's cooler is this, who's fishing pole is this? Blanckety blank blank." I said, mine. He didn't hesitate, and grabbed all of my equipment, and moved it back about 20 feet, and said "no one fishes in my spot". I told him that he can't do that, and he said "try and stop me".

I was hoping that all the others around me would stand up with me and help me out. Nope, everyone just stuck their tails under their legs and acted like nothing happened. I actually don't blame them, because he is huge. If I fight would have broke out, someone probably would have been killed by him.

Another time, I was fishing at River Mill Dam. Sure enough, guess who was there. He needed to take a leak, and walked behind me to where my friends fish was, and let her rip right on my friend's fish. I don't really know what he accomplished by doing this, but it happened.

Last year, on the point at PC, he needed to take a leak, and just let her rip right there into the water. graemlins/stupid.gif

Anyone that does things things is DANGEROUS. If you see this guy, don't have anything to do with him. Sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt or killed by this guy.

Just watch out and be careful. Don't let him fool you. graemlins/berry.gif

Very well put SKP and Ill second it He is in my opinion not one of the good guys. You wouldnt believe some of the stuff he has done at PC. VERY pushy and rude beyond belief. One of these days he will pull it on the wrong person and get his rear end handed to him. Although HE IS HUGE!! I think it would take more than just one person to "hand it to him". Or just the "right" person in the "right" mood.

I have "voiced" my opinion of him and what he does very clearly at PC many times. He likes to bully his way around and thinks he owns the place. He is exactly the kind of person that gives PC a bad reputation.

I don't fish PC anymore (too crowded) but I do know this kind os as_. I wonder why no one files a complaint with the police? Are they afraid too? Bullies need to be controled and have their bluffs called. Cooler time and law suits can do that, if you have the time and or money to drive it through. :depressed:

The thing about people like this guy is their day will come! There is always someone a little bit bigger, tougher or crazier out there and this bully will get taken down a notch or two.
Yes he was doing the same as guiding! and deserves the citation he got.

Sorry guys but where is PC your talking about? I'm due to go fishing with a good friend soon. I"ll call him T. He's one of the finest and most gentle men I've ever met. He also has a knack of taking situations like listed above and going for a little walk with the said party and ( just a couple of yards away and talks real real quiet. No one hears a word except the offending party) buy the end the offender has had a life altering experince. I've seen T. do this time and time again. I've know him 11 years and he's never had a bad thing said about him, never been in a fight in that time, never been in jail and never raises his voice. With his gentle ways and being 6'5" logger thats built like a stone people listen real well! graemlins/lurk.gif

PC is Pacific City on the Nestucca at the boat ramp hole aka Bob Straub hole aka the "combat zone" It has many other names as well but I dont think listing the others here would be appropriate

This guy deserves what ever he gets but I dont think anyone could talk any sense into him. He needs major graemlins/1zhelp.gif .

He will just step infront of the wrong person one of thee days and that person will plant their size 12 or 13 boot in the right spot and he will go SPLASH out in the river.

I hate people that think they own the river like that jerk. I have never had met this guy but I don't think he would try anything with me, I am 6' 7" and going about 275 right now, oh and I wear a size 13 steel toed boot. Most of my buddies call me Gently Ben but believe me I have no problem standing up for myself. I have run into many people like this in my years of fishing and I usually just ask them for some space, or to tone down the laguage ect... and have never had a problem. Confrontation on the river bank is not a good thing but sometimes it cannot be avoided, if any of you run into this guy drop me a line and I will go with you and straighten him out!!

In response to WP earlier, this "gentleman" has a long standing reputation with the police, they know his name well. Last year he was warned that one more call and he would be banned from the river. He did seem to tone down a little after that. If any of you wish to get away from the bank crowd, send me an e-mail, I go just about every weekend, I have room in the boat for at least one more every trip. Hopefully someone that can CATCH fish, we seem to just be doing a lot of fishing.

to those of you who fish the COMBAT ZONE zone at pacific city--I'll be fishing from oct 12th thru oct 17th on the right edge of the boat ramp. (south edge) 9ft green bobber rod, wearing camo chest waters usually with my wife and a black/white springer spaniel. Come by and say hello and help me net some big chrome hens!!!!! Tides are lousy then but there should still be a few biters around. Bring your body armor!!!!!

MasterCaster,

I've lost count how many times I've fished PC. Do you know Santos or Pete (Hawaiian looking guys)? I fish with them when I can, but our days off don't coincide. I'll be there Wednesday with a first timer. Look for a green boat, MirroCraft boat. I don't know what hat I will wear, but possible one with an Alaska logo.

I'll wait to see the action before I decide to fish from the boat or bank.

I'll be coming from Salem area.

Please post your fishing report or email me.

Rogue and everyone else, sound like this guy needs some time by himself. obviousely his esteem is only as big as his catch. i have been to pc and would like to again but haven't had the time or fortune to go. too bad he's a jerk leave it at that. i'm 5'7" so i simply move aside and catch my fish when i can.

i wanted to mention that being my size most fisherman do over take space on me just because it happens but not intentially to short me. i simply ask or move to where we're cool. matter of fact the majority of guys who are built like a tank are the nices person i meet. i wish i would of caught his name but i had the pleasure to talk to a handfull of guys this last weekend who was simply cool as heck after i got to know them. i really wish everyone could be that way but that's what makes us all different.

happy trails, now that the rain is here.

hey does anyone know the old commercial fisherman that wears all yellow gear down at pc long white beard. normally fishes the west end of the boat ramp. looks like he just got of a commercial fishing boat. he's one nices man i hope his fortune has changed since the commercial industry and economy has slowed. everyone down their knows him, nice guy. tell him the skinny asian kid and big white guys say's hello. probably doesn't remember me but he taugh my buddy and i how to fish pc.

I know exactly who you are talking about choppers. Looks like a true blue fishing boat captain you would see on tv or something. I agree a very nice guy. Now that I think about it I dont remember seeing him down there at all last year.

In all reallity most of the guys down there are really nice if you give them half a chance.

mastercaster, your absolutely right pc gets a bad rap. i hope the the guy we're talking about was able to take care of his family. he told me about what he was going through.

next time i go down to pc i'll be wearing my ifish hat. just look for the 11' rod with a big daiwa reel casting a bobber. really hope to go this year, nothing like pulling in a big hog down their. if i'm lucky i can pull the serf and turf during hunting season.

good luck fishing, choppers.

I know Santos and Pete. I work at the same place Santos does. I met them through a mutual friend, Frank, that used to work here too. Those guys really have the whole bobber fishing thing dialed in. I recall fishing with them for springers at the mouth of 3 rivers when it used to be much narrower in there and the springers would keg up.

I used to work with Santos also, that is where I met him, and eventually Pete.

I've learned my bobber technique from them, and can say that they are good instructors.

When you learn from the best, bobber fishing is great!!!

It was fun to outfish Pete this year on bobber for springers. Normally, the opposite is true. Good instructors for sure!

Maybe I should see if someone will purchase some fishing equipment and pay me a minimum of two hours like our enterprising fisherman that's the main focus of this discussion. Or maybe Santos and Pete should!

Just thought I would ad to the discussion.
I was at the Salmon on Sunday morning for a while. Got there before daylight to get my spot. Fished beside two guys that were really nice. They shared dome info and such. I helped another guy net a fish, and tried to be pleasant and friendly. I am new to fishing this river, and I want to get along with everyone and have a good time.
Driving home I was a little set off by a comment made by one of the "locals" and I thought I would share with the board.
I had forgotton my hip boots and Sunday morning was incoming tide, I ended up getting a little wet at the spot I was at. I had a bag of gear that I took up on the bank. I told a couple guys ( one of which, I had just netted a fish for) that I was going to set my bag there before the water started up on the bank. The one fellow there said " started, it's already coming up" and I responded yeah and laughed or something. He further responded " Yeah, and if you come up here, your feet wont be the only thing getting wet" ...... I just laughed at the time, but on the way home started to get a little irritated that someone had to act like that.
Just for his info, ( if you happen to see this) I may go in the water, but I will be glad to take you with me :-)
...... sorry, got a little fired up...
Leave the arrogance at home......... Let's just fish!!!!

The guy probably likes to throw his size and weight around, picking on who ever he can intimidate. If met with a wall, he would probably put his tail between his legs and P all over himself.

Rich,

I remember you now. I also remember Frank. I worked in the Fountainside Cafe when it first opened in 1987. I don't know if you guys remember me. Say hi to Santos for me. Ask him if he is going to fish this fall. Maybe I will see you at PC.

Steelie Ben,

Most people don't have a problem standing up for themselves, but when the guy is close to a foot taller, and half again in weight heavier and been drinking, people including me tend to have to take it. I've seen it many times, when he gets rude, everyone else around him does nothing, because they are afraid of him. Yes, most are intimidated by the jerk. I honestly can't recall someone standing their ground with him. I am not going to do it. I just have to ignore him and fish, but with a watchful eye. I don't have the choice.

If he can fish civilized, and not like a Neanderthal, fine, but if not, I agree that the law must become involved, because he is dangerous. I don't know what else.

SKP,

I see Santos in the halls every now and then and he suffers from the same affliction I do. Can't get out as much as we used to itis. :depressed:

Typically I make 1-2 trips a year to PC and I generally take the Old Yeller Willies and park on the opposite from the ramp and chuck bobbers from there. That way the crowds just don't seem to matter as much.

I don't remember you off the top of my head though I probably would if I saw you. I'm a little rounder than I used to be but if ya see me say "Hi"
