The Columbia River Compact agencies of Oregon and Washington met today to review salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon stock status and consider treaty Indian and non-Indian fishing options. The Compact took the following actions:
Non-Indian Fisheries
Commercial Mainstem Salmon Fishery
· Adopted a non-Indian commercial salmon season as follows:
Season: 7 AM to 7 PM Monday September 16 (12 hrs)
7 AM to 7 PM Thursday September 19 (12 hrs)
Area: Mouth upstream to Longview Bridge (Zones 1-3).
Sanctuaries: Grays River, Elokomin-A, and Abernathy Creek sanctuaries are in effect.
Gear: Unslackened floater gill net with 6" maximum mesh size restriction.
Allowable Sales: Salmon and sturgeon.
Washington Reporting Rule: WDFW adopted a regulation requiring all Washington wholesale buyers purchasing fish from the commercial mainstem salmon fishery to send a report of their landings to WDFW by 10AM on the day after the purchase date via either: a) FAX transmission to (360) 906-6776 or (360) 906-6777b) E-mail to crfishtickets@dfw.wa.govc) Telephone to 1-866-791-1281
Treaty Indian Fisheries
· Adopted a treaty Indian commercial salmon season as follows:
Season: 6 AM Monday September 16 to 6 PM Friday September 20 (4½ days)
Area: All of Zone 6.
Sanctuaries: All standard dam and river mouth sanctuaries remain in effect, except the closure at the mouth of Spring Creek is the smaller sanctuary within a radius of 150 feet of the Spring Creek Hatchery fishway.
Gear: 8" minimum mesh size restriction in effect.
Allowable Sales: Chinook, coho, steelhead, walleye, and shad.
Miscellaneous Rules: Effective 6 AM Monday August 19 and until further notice, fish caught in platform and hook and line fisheries may be sold. Fish caught in the Klickitat River may be sold when the Klickitat River is open. Sturgeon between 4-5 feet may be retained for subsistence use.

The states of Oregon and Washington approved the following rule change for Columbia River sturgeon sport fisheries:
2002 Lower Columbia River Sturgeon Sport Fishery
· Prohibit the retention of sturgeon in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam, including Youngs Bay, during Tuesday October 1, 2002 through Friday November 22, 2002.
· Catch limits and other restrictions listed in the current 2002 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations pamphlet remain in effect the entire year.
Future Compact Hearings
· The next Compact hearing is scheduled for 1 PM Wednesday September 18 at the Commission room in the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Headquarters office located at 2501 SW First Avenue, Portland, Oregon for the purposes of reviewing salmon and steelhead stock status, reviewing fisheries, and considering commercial fishing options.
