Got a new Alumaweld 19' Stryker (as some of you know), with a 9.9 Merc EXL shaft Sailpower kicker.

The 9.9 4-stroke trolls too fast for fishing the upper Columbia. Not way too fast.... just a bit too fast, even at the lowest tiller setting.....

Should I..... get a prop with less pitch and/or less diameter (since I need a back up for both motors anyway.....)

Of should I do something else, like ask the dealer??? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Thanks in advance....... cuz I know you'll come through for me.......

A different prop or a small "happy troller" trolling plate will do just fine. I have one on my 40 hp and it is actually to slow for lakes unless i give it some throttle.

Thanks Cagey..... but I don't think I want a trolling plate on it......

It came with the standard ~10" d, 9.5" p prop.

I'm thinkin' going down to a 7 pitch, and keep the diameter......

Any ideas? Suggestions? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Go for a trolling plate , Smaller prop or a prop with less pitch and you might over rev your kicker at some time and that is not good for them.

Tim -

Another option is to put out a sea anchor or even two. It will slow you down quite a bit. Try hanging one off each side about midship so they won't be near the prop and two will balance the boat.

I have found it to work well. Unlike buckets, the sea anchors are easy to bring up, even mid-troll. I use this method in certain areas of the Willamette that get very lake like and I want to hold or even back up.

If you change props you will give up torque and/or top end which might come in handy in other water conditions or if the big one breaks down...

englund marine sells a small trolling plate that is on a spring. so at low speeds its down and doing its business, at higher speeds it pushes up and out of the way.... my cousin has one and it works great, and very low profile.
