Gang, I have to share this one.

All right, here's the deal - the ultimate multi sport day.

One of my other hobbies besides fishing is racing sailboats. I have a Cal 20 called (of course) Redbull. Some of you may have seen it because it has a huge American flag painted across the entire transom. On 9/7 we had a regatta on the Columbia. Most of the racing takes place between the I-5 and 205 bridges.

When I left the yacht club, there was no breeze so I tossed in the fishing gear. We checked in with the race committee and proceeded over to some deeper water near the Washington side.

I set the anchor, set the pole in the holder and rigged the boat in case the wind came up. About 5 minutes later there was breeze on the water as well as a barge coming downstream so I started pulling up the anchor. As I was on the bow, my buddy's like "DUDE - FISH." He swung and it didn't move so we thought we picked upt the bottom while pulling up the anchor. I swung and thought it was a cable cuz it gave a little and then stopped. I swung hard to break it off and then the cable started taking line.

Uhmmmmmm, dudes, like, we don't have a net. Can anyone say McGyver? We got the fish to the surface, but once it saw it's fate it was gone again. Well, now things are getting interesting - the wind is starting to come up, other racers are circling the committee boat to get the racing started and we're trying to land a 30 pound hen without a net from a sailboat. The God were with us. I see this guy in a red sled with his yellow lab, and I flagged him down. I asked if he was Crabbait? "NO." He tossed us his net. Fish now firmly in the boat. Net back to hero and we take off towards the race course. So we have blood & slime everywhere, a 30pndr on the cockpit floor, I'm whackin' it with the tiller extension and a race in 5 minutes. The competitors are all still milling around wonderin' what the heck I was doing when we went by the committee boat the tossed it in their cockpit.

A huge cheer from everyone.

We ended up winning both races and the regatta.

We promptly installed a couple colds one and high-fived the day.

MUUUUHAAAAAAA!

Way to go, redbull!!

I am a firm believer of when ever you get a chance to wet a line, your odds of hooking something go WAY up!!

Great story, and congratulations on winning both races.

Peace, Tom

Hey Redbull,

WAY TO GO MAN!!!!

I love to sail a 30 ft'er and troll a rod or two behind. I was in Southern CA for 7 years, joined Pacific Sailing Club the first year (1986), and did a lot of sailing. We also use to race 28' Newports maybe 6 to 8 boats on Thursdays after work. Had some great memories.

Three times a year I'd get some fishing buddies to go on a 34', for 3 days to Catalina for fishing fun - troll for Bonito, drift for Rock Cod, and cast for Sand Bass. On one trip I even took a crabring and caught a lobster at Catalina.

Keep up the fun.
Cheerio'
