I was backtrolling mag warts (the old kind) yesterday and had some weird behavior occour. Every once in a while the warts would come to the surface. Most of the time they had weeds on them, but sometimes they did not. It seemed like I would get a weedless surfacing when I pulled hard into a fast current line, so is there a speed threshold I don't know about? Any other ideas? I did tune the several warts I used and I used 3 different lures.

The only time I have had this happen is when the plug is out of tune, and it doesn't take much. When they are out of tune they will acually make a gaint circle underwater and surface if the bill hooks it will dive right back down like nothing is wrong and circle again. This can acually take a long time to happen. Its worth a check.

That sounds like what was going on. Ill have to give them a bit more scrutiny before I send them off to fish. Thanks.

Shane is correct, this will occur when out of tune, and especially in fast water. Try putting a medium size inter-lock snap @ the bill's attachment point. If yours has the split ring there, remove it and replace with inter-lock snap. This will let the plug wiggle better, and be more tolerant w/ faster current. I also use only one hook on my Warts. I remove both hooks, attach a small split ring to the belly loop, then a #7 barrel swivel, and another small split ring with the new larger hook on the last split ring. I have found this to allow the plug to dive deeper, and you get much better hook-ups.

Drachir, Thanks for the tip. I just changed a few of my warts over to that configuration. I have to work on the house this weekend, but the weekend after that, watch out fish! Thanks again to you and Shane.
