My mate and I are headed out for Winchester Bay monday morning, planning on arriving as crowd thins out.

We are planning on using cut plug and live herring with Pro-Troll Salmon Killer.

What size of herring should we plan on using? Want to purchase correct size of Salmon Killer at Eugene G.I. Joes before we leave. $2.88 sale! Any particular color?

Should we start out of Salmon Harbor or put in at reedsport?

Also I was thinking of jigging for some herring. What rig? This will not be for bait. I love kippered herring and would like to try making some. Any recipes?

Thanks a lot. Hope to meet some of you over there. Cell phone is 541-554-7367

Well, it depends on if you are a river fisherman or an ocean fisherman.

You can read my report from 8/24/02 of Winchester Bay. But basically the fish were not in the river yet, so we had to go out 10 miles to get into the Chinook. Got 4 though 22, 17, 14, & 10. Used Purple label herring - plug cut. Also fished deep 80 pulls seemed to work the best.

I have heard reports of fish now being caught in the bay, but it is day to day different.

Good luck.

Wally, I'm heading out to Reedsport in a couple minutes and will let you know how we do.

Skipper,,,, I want to drop some crab pots and also a crap trap, where would you suggest dropping them.\

Also what about fishing Charleston?

Thanks in advance

Lepper and I fished the coquille derby and overheard a guy from Reedsport saying winchester is nothing short of horrible right now. I think every bay here on the S. Coast is slow. All of the fish are outside in roughly 300' of water. It's good fishing out there, but the cold water is keeping them away from the bays. Hopefully they'll come in soon. The coquille was horrible also. I know of 6 fish caught today for about 100 boats.

For salmon most the boats are right in front of the Reedsport ramp, to upriver at the first bend just down from Dean Creek. Had a reliable report of a 36 lber.

Any store bought herring rig works. I jig off the old CG pier, where everyone crabs, but have not been in awhile?

Best bet is to buy fresh live herring. Right there at the bait shop on Oarrock road Winchester Bay. Plug cut on double hooks. Works every time. Buy rock salt to keep your new herring for the next few days. 5 lb bag for 2 bucks at the local market there in Winchester.

Alligator:

I know this is a little late:

You might try Halfmoon Bay. I put mine across the bay from the entrance to the harbor. Only got 3 keepers. I think one of mine were checked by some other contemptible scoundrel. You may want to keep- an- eye on them.

Fished Winchester Sunday and there was a Salmon derby being held by S.T.E.P. There was probly 300-400 boats in the area and only 25 fish were checked when we left around 5pm. graemlins/berry.gif The Coho are starting to trickle in and fish were jumping and rolling everywhere but no biters. Water was 68 degrees...maybe cooler weather and rain will help in the upcoming weeks. We tried evrything, plug cut, RSK's, Spinners, Coyotes, and all depths....

I fished the Umpqua at Reedsport on Saturday. I concur, there were a lot of boats and that many fish caught. We boated one 20 pounder and had two others to the boat more than once or twice but couldn't get them in the net. Also had two other rather aggressive drive-bys. (Getting the Ifish lingo down now)
Went back Monday and got another fish and lost another. A little slow but it was fun. It was my first time fishing up there and really enjoyed the area.
