I have found a boat to put my motor on that has a steering wheel but no throttle or gear controls. Currentely I drive from the back on the boat I have so I don't have any need for controls.

My question is: How hard is it to add throttle and gear controls to a boat? Are they pretty standard or do you have to custom order them for each type of boat and motor? Where is the best place to get them and approximate cost?

Thanks in advance.

I am not an expert, but I have a friend that was considering the same move from tiller to console controls. There are two issues to deal with. The first is modifying the throttle/tranny linkages by removing the tiller controls and replacing them with the appropriate console controls. As I understand it, this was going to cost around $400 on a 40hp Merc. The othe part is purchasing the controls. Not sure how much that would run. Depending on how old and what manufacturer you are running, you may be able to order the parts new. Otherwise you may have to start searching scrap yards. Another consideration would be to sell your tiller motor and replace it with what you want. This is the route my friend decided to take.
