Good Morning!

I too am from the Newport area and am looking forward to getting updated info from and out to those who want to fish the Yaquina, Alsea and the Siletz Rivers.

We have lived in Newport over a dozen years and have fished the Yaquina hard the past 5-6 years with very good success for fall nooks. It makes it much easier when you can almost always jig a few fresh herring in the lower bay before heading up river. This fishery should start in the next 3 weeks or so.

We just got back from the B10 fishery last week and had moderate success. We started out skunked on Mon/Tues, but then 4 of us got 14 fish in the next 3 days. We cleared out when the crowds hit on Saturday and ran for home.

Have a great day. I gotta head for work. SD

Welcome aboard.

This is my first year fishing Newport and I've done it a bunch this year.

I'll be all ears when you start discussing the fall chinooks.

Welcome SD!

Right off the bat I have a question for you. We fished the Yaquina for fall nooks last Sept with no luck. We launched at Toledo and headed downriver. We trolled herring and spinners with nary even a strike. Fish were rolling all around us and we saw several netted throughout the day. Any tips for fishing the Yaquina or any alternate places to launch or fish? Maybe it just wasn't our day! Any tips would be great.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

Last year, because of the lack of rain until late, the fish held in the lower river for weeks. I keep track of the fish caught out of my boat on a little calendar I keep in the glove box. Last year, between everybody that fished out of my boat, we put 81 nooks in it on the Yaquina alone. We had several 4-5 and 6 fish days.

We fish the flats alot, between Sawyers Landing and the #37 marker, which is down stream. Most of the time, we use plug cuts, combined with either a white or white/chartrusse 00 flasher with long (6-7') leaders. I think the white or white/char flashers work so well because the water in the Yaquina is almost always murky and the nooks see them better. At times, I will also use large spinners and occasionally KWIK fish, but I am a firm believer in plug cuts.

My wife caught our last fish on the Yaquina last year, right in front of RiverBend Moorage, on Nov 1. It was a nickel bright hen, about 25 lbs. (Then the rains came and the fish finally rocketed up river.) I posted a pic of this fish and wife and hopefully my first attempt will work. Good fishing! SD http://www.ifish.net/uploads/312710233.jpg
