Tonight, Wednesday, at 8PM in the Portland area, Oregon Public Broadcasting will replay the National Geographic special, "Mayday! Lost at Sea", an inside look at the dangerous world of commercial fishing.
"For thousands of years, man has ventured out to the sea to harvest its bounty, but in return for what the sea gives, it also takes. Danger is a fact of life understood by seasoned fishermen, but all too easily forgotten in an age of steel boats and modern rescue capability. Faced with depleting stocks, fishermen now take chances their fathers wouldn't have dared to take, and no amount of new technology can guarantee the safety of a fisherman who pushes too hard in an unforgiving sea. I saw that last time and it was a real eye opener about the sea and over fishing and fish management.

graemlins/1zhelp.gif  Five days in the gulf aboard a 58" boat, pot fishing for black cod was enough for this guy. graemlins/1zhelp.gif
That trip broke me of ever wanting to be a commercial fisherman.

Thanks Pete and OPB. Great show. The slush ice breaking over the side of that one boat, bowling the crew into the drink cured me completely of ever wanting to fish the Bering Sea.
Nothing gets through HY-80 and the last time I was in (under) those waters I was surrounded by it.
