FYI...I just talked with ODFW...actually, they called...they'll decide this afternoon probably to limit anglers to a one-fish limit at buoy 10, starting Friday or Saturday, but probably Saturday...want to hold down the catch rates, especially on tules zooming through right now..no closure...yet...King said they want to avoid that...one fish, either fin-clipped coho or a chinook...
I did my part...took pilgrim there yesterday and got skunked, but apparently didn't dampen the bite enough...
they counted 1,500 boats on Saturday and Sunday...about a fish per boat on each day...
I'll have it in the paper in the morning. They meet at 1 or 2...

Thanks Bill! Glad you are aboard! Could be much worse, I remember a few years ago where I couldn't fish upriver at all for brights.
It's a tough balance...

And if you fish the ocean? Or if it is left as two fish above the bridge and you launch in Chinook? Or same scenario but you launch in Hammond?
Jeeez! It is getting ridiculous to sort out!
Who keeps tules anyway?....

NEWBIE QUESTION ALERT!!!
What paper does Bill Monroe write for?
What are the publications your guys read for fishing and boating news in Oregon?

Oregonian is who he writes for, and the various (http://www.ifish.net) fishing (http://www.steelheader.net) websites (http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com) are what I read.

Been expecting this, fine with me as the coho should begin showing soon. How soon we all forget, the last few years it was one chinook from the get go and it wasn't too many years ago that we didn't get a chance to get on um at all.

I know things can change rapidly with the run timing, but check out this quote from the last Columbia river compact hearing...
"Fishery Updates
Buoy 10 Sport Fishery
• The Buoy 10 fishery (from the mouth upstream to the Tongue Point/Rocky Point line)
opened August 1 for chinook, adipose fin-clipped coho, and adipose fin-clipped steelhead.
Daily salmon bag limit is two fish.
• Coho fishing started off very slow with catch rates of less than 0.10 coho per rod during the
first thirteen days of the fishery.
• Catch rates during the first half of August typically range between 0.1 and 0.5 coho per rod.
• As is typical, chinook fishing began slowly with catch rates of 0.02-0.08 chinook per rod
through the first seven days of August. Chinook fishing improved during August 9-13 with
catch rates ranging between 0.16 and 0.23 chinook per rod.
• Stock composition analysis for chinook catch will occur inseason."
Someone do the math with me, please. Let's assume a conservative (high for weekdays and low for weekends) number of angler trips per day at 1000 angler trips per day. According to the number above and the catch rate that would put it at about (on average) 80 Chinook and 100 Coho per day for the B10 fisher. Multiply those numbers by 13 days and you get roughly 1040 Chinook and 1300 Coho for the first TWO WEEKS of August. Even if you double those numbers (to reflect the catch in the last 4 days of the second week) those numbers are still miniscule compared to what was allocated to the gillnetters
As I mentioned in another post, the gillnetters were 'allocated' 24000 Chinook for the month of August alone! And they will get more shots in September. So tell me how is the run endanger at this point and warrants cutting back? Are they 'downsizing' the run forcast? It will be interesting to see how the numbers actually play out for last week as I am sure they spiked up quite a bit.
Worst (or best case) scenario, the catch rate goes to roughly a fish per rod for the last three weeks of August (including last week). That still only puts it at 22,000 for Sportfishers
Oh well, we'll see.

I just found this looking for some historical info on catch results and regs changes for the previous years. Very interesting.
Follow this link and check out pages 50-56.

Well this is not the official word, but I called WDFW and they said that starting Saturday you will be allowed two fish only one of which can be a Chinook. Don't kill the messenger.

This kind of fish management makes me sick!! They give the Gosh Darn Gillnetters so many days to fish and they just clean out the entire river. When are our Fish Management Agencies going to get it through their Thick Skulls, that it's the Sports Angler who foots the lions share of the bill for these fisheries!!! I'm not sure what the comparison is in dollars spent and into the local economy, on a per fish basis. I'm sure the Sports Anglers put at least 10 times the money out per fish, than does the Gillnetter. This argument I'm sure is falling on deaf ears in both the ODFW, and the WDFW. Some Day I Hope To See Gillnets Outlawed in the Columbia!!!!

How Big a family ya got Phish-on?
A medium size chinook will put ten meals on our table. Just the wife and I... a couple of soon to be "rustic elders." A couple of fish a week is good for us. It's not always about the catching.
Now I suppose the nice quiet fishery we have been having in my neck of the woods is going to change.
