I fished alone on Monday Aug. l2. I moor at Ilwaco. As tide started to come in, Iwent up to Hammond area and tried for chinook. Saw one fish caught and everybody I asked said not much was going on. In mid tide I went to buoy l0 which was suprisngly crowded. Being alone, I stayed out of the crowd toward the Washington side. I had one strike. I saw some nets around Buoy and it appeared that there was a bite there but not a great one. I have been out 3 times now and have yet to catch a fish. Last year it was rare for me not to get a limit.

When I drove back to Portland partly into the outgoing tide, I crossed the Astoria Bridge. Three boats only.

My son will be fishing with some friends this weekend. Tides are very early and a daybreak start only gives a few hours of incoming. I'm going to take a fishing break until reports are better. it is a long trip there.

Yesterday, the water was great until late afternoon. A few fish caught, sporadically, throughtout the day. A couple hours into the incoming tide, the wind and current at B10 picked up significantly and a short flurry of activity.

Here's what it looked like while people were waiting for the tide to turn.

My dad was there the last two days. He fished by himself out there which is pretty brave in itself due to the competitive nature of this area.

He had lots of take downs by short biters. Had a big nook to the boat and was ready to net it .....but it was not ready and is now free. :depressed:  . Like the others said it was not a long period of landing fish.

Seems to be kind of dead up in the church area. 10 to 14 and along the false channel intfront of Ilwaco and Chinook is where the action is right now.

I am heading over Thursday night for a 10 day vacation. Will be fishing both the ocean and B10 area as long as they keep it open.

Like FM2 blabbered, big herring, big flashers produced fish last week. But who know what they will bite one day to the next.

BTW, anchovies are working great in the ocean.

Nehalem bay was kind to me last weekend. Easier than the Buoy 10 scene. Whole herring along the bottom, downtown Wheeler - by the house with the pirate flag. End of the incoming tide (and the first of the outgoing, someone said).

That said, I will be in the Columbia at the next opportunity. I'm not sure why

Sunday we ended up w/ 1 keeper for 2 guys, monday 4 keepers for 4 guys, tuesday, 2 keepers for 4 guys.... and minus one brand new heavy duty crab pot to some guy that thought he diserved it more than i did....

From the ODFW Weekly Fishihg report...

In the lower Columbia River, effort was similar this past week compared to the previous week, however effort, in the Buoy 10 estuary fishery increased over last week and had the greatest concentration of boat angler effort. Above the estuary, the greatest concentration of boat angler effort occurred in the Troutdale area. The greatest concentration of bank angler effort occurred in the Gorge below Bonneville Dam. Boat anglers had the best success for chinook in the Buoy 10 fishery where Oregon anglers averaged 0.44 chinook and 0.10 adipose fin-clipped coho caught per boat. Boat anglers in the Portland to Longview area had the best success for steelhead with an average of 0.37 steelhead and 0.04 chinook caught per boat. Boat anglers in the Gorge averaged 0.35 steelhead and 0.12 chinook caught per boat, and boat anglers in the Troutdale area averaged 0.29 steelhead and 0.02 chinook caught per boat. Bank anglers had the best success in the Gorge where anglers averaged 0.47 steelhead caught per rod while anglers in the Portland to Longview areas averaged 0.04 steelhead caught per rod.

Estuary Boats (Oregon): Weekly checking showed 241 chinook and 57 adipose fin-clipped coho kept for 544 boats (complete trips).

From WDFW...

Fall chinook fishing got off to a slow start in the opening of the Buoy 10 fishery at the beginning of the month, but action should build to a peak around the third week of August, says Joe Hymer, WDFW regional fish biologist. In recent days, both effort and catch have been light. On Saturday, Aug. 3, a total of 310 private boats and 11 charter boats were counted. Joint Oregon and Washington sampling showed 270 boat anglers with 15 chinook and eight hatchery coho kept. Stronger tidal action expected in coming days generally pushes ocean forage fish farther into the Columbia River estuary, with the salmon following behind them, Hymer notes.

Also.... We got out in the ocean each morning at low tide, but becuase of the tide timing it was late morning each time.. there was a good bite till noon or so and then it would slow off and the wind would pick up - and we would head back to 10..... did have the pleasure of releasing some nice kings out there and some big native coho.....

I talked to fishbait today at 11am and he had 5 nook in the box at the mouth of the Columbia with 4 rods and they were hunting hard for the last 3.

It is gonna be hard to listen to him when he gets back and starts talking smack.

Another update from Fishbait - they quit around noon with 6 in the box. Decided they would rather go back to the house, relax, and drink a few cold beverages than chase any more nooks. At least for today. Must be rough to have the life - these job things are a pain in the *ss sometimes.

Bait o Eggs: I thought one Chinook apiece, plus or minus the Coho was all that was allowed...you pointed out five nook for four rods in your post - is that kosher? I fished under the Astoria bridge today and for three rods we had six takedowns, and three in the cooler: 26# Mr. Pig, 18#Mrs Pig, Piglet, and a jack (tossed). Rough water, wind; coasties patrolling the ten area dissuading lingering. Doc

The bite was from 6am-9am, then died pretty fast. If you were there during those times, you caught fish. The two of us ended up getting our 4 chinooks, and losing several others. Biggest was a 28lb. full of eggs!!!!
It's starting!!!!!!!!

Just got back from Astoria, caught two Chinook all day. Caught both towards the bridge. Fished the incoming tide out at buoy 10, had one on and saw 4 caught. Appeared to be more action just below the bridge. good luck

Good bite at the bridge yesterday morning, just after high slack. Pretty windy and rough, but the fish were there. Just darn hard to keep the boat moving in the right direction.

Previous days we did OK around the bridge at the tide change, didn't see squat caught lower down. Everyone we talked to said it was slow, slow, slow out at B10 itself, as well as further in. We ran out out to take a look, saw 200 boats, no nets out, no bent rods, and a lot of glum faces.

We did OK, however, in the various places we fished inside and so did a few other folks that we ran into.

Yesterday however, seemed like anyone willing to put up with the wind was able to get into a fish or two.

Did I say it was windy yesterday?
