I use a uni knot to splice leader and to tie swivels.

Backwards improved cinch knot. No mainline knot failures, no need for glue, etc.

The knot recommended by Tie-Master.com works pretty well. Per guide Jim Bain the knot is rated over 100% of the line if tied correctly. I have a couple of these gizmo's and they work pretty well.

- Triple Palomar for connection to swivels, etc.
- Uni knot for same above application.

- Uni to Uni for attaching a mono leader (approx. the same dia of both lines).
- Albright for above application if mono is much larger.

I'm surprized you guys are using uni's on Tuff ine. I used uni's almost excusivley on mono after I discovered it (used to use an improved clinch). On the tuff line I broke off several oversize sturg before a friend told me to try a normal clinch (not an improved), but to go around the hook or swivel twice before twisting the tag around the running line. You tehn go back though both the loops and pull it tight to complete. The doubling prevents the know from slipping (which a regular clinch will on tuff line). I have not lost a knot on tuff since I started tying this. Anybody know if there's a name for a regular clinch but doubled looped at the start?

Ditto on what Miss B Haven said.

I have had my share of oversize on that knot and never a failure. The key is the knot cinches down on itself not the tackle.

Miss B - I go through the swivel or hook twice forming a loop, then seven times around and back through the loop with the tuff line doubled the whole way. Is this what you are talking about or are you running a single line?

The doubled line leaves a "dead" line in the knot to act as a cushion and to help prevent slippage. I have never had a break at the knot using this one.

I've been useing the Tuff line knot for yrs and it has never BROKEN NEVER !! and I have caught several oversize and legals.I also have tuff line on my salmon poles 50# and use the same knot and ditto never had a knot break.
Fishermans have a diagram of the knot,it works great.

The Palomar knot works great. But the best one I have used I learned in Alaska. I don't know the name but you basically double back a foot or so of line and tie a clinch knot with doubled over line. It's great, I landed 100-215lb halibut all day with out re tieing.

Get a Joe Little tie master, very quick and easy knot and it's designed for braided lines.

I don't leave home without my Joe   :hoboy:

Joe Little tie master. I too would not leave the house without one. Cured all my knot tying problems for all these new fancy lines coming out in the past few years. I can also use it for making my own bobber stopper knots. <'///><

I would agree with all the above people who suggest the Tie-Master. It ties easy and very strong knots. In fact, I've broken a few swivels off lately instead of the line!

In reply to what its called to double your line through the eye of a snap/swivel prior to a barrel type knot (Uni, blood, etc), I've heard of it called a "San Diego" because of necessity given size of tuna, dorado, etc that need extra strong knots.

For braids, I use a over hand loop to pass back under the two eye passes then barrel wrap up away from the eye for 6-8 wraps and fiinish passing through the top loop. Tightening requires tension on all three directions. With mono it will snap, but this knot takes advantage of the lubricity of sprectra braid and if pulled very tight leads to a tight barrel knot that will not slip because the snell-the-line design. Strongest knot I know of.
