I have died and gone to heaven. Don't pinch me, I don't want to wake up.

My 23rd wedding anniversary is on Sunday. My wife and I are going out to Manzanita for a couple of nights to celebrate. Out of the blue, my wife asked me if I would take her salmon fishing out on Newhalem Bay while we are there. Ya just gotta love her for moments like that. graemlins/hearton.gif I'm sure, in part, that she is doing this for me, but after catching her first springer in May, she, too, has serious salmon fever. Look out Tillamook Bay. I'm not sure you're ready for her. (Kind of a "city-fied" Jennie)

Anyway, it seems a little early for Newhalem Bay, but at the same time, you never catch anything if you don't throw the bait in the water. We will put in at Wheeler. Should we troll cut-plug herring, bait-wrap a Kwik-Fish, or use a spinner? I've only fished the Bay a couple of times, always later in the Season (end of October / early November). Any tips will help.

Doc I like trolling large herring tight to the bottom right at Wheeler and then up at Nehalem itself I like spinners, rainbow does well. No grass up there either.

I'll be down in Wheeler on the 14th. Troll on the Wheeler side to down river untill you get to the church. Or go up river troll on left side just past the bridge. Or where the river splits troll up there. Hope this helps

Doc, I drove up to wheeler the other day (Sunday) and my lady and I saw three fish boated in under an hour  just south of the dock at wheeler on the upper end of the incoming tide. Yesterday I went up there to deposit my boat for some minor repairs :depressed: and took a gander at the fishing and heard of several caught prior to low tide.

I've had good luck trolling plug cut herring at Nehalem. But we've also has luck with a spinner with green beads and a brass blade. Lot of folks catch them on rainbow spinners as well.

Maybe you should put a herring on one rod, and a spinner on the other. It's always nice to have two different things out there.

Either plug cut herring (size large) or a wrapped K15-16 Kwikfish does the trick. 24" dropper and about 3-4 oz's of lead.

Whole green-label, trolling with the tide, 17 feet deep = 26 pounds of agitated chinook.

Still eatin' it.

My wife and I thank you for all of the tips. We're looking forward to the trip. Even if the fish aren't biting, it will be nice to get away from work for a couple of days.

Troll cut plug hearing at Nehalem and Wheeler! I fished Nehalem sunday and hooked a nice 18-19lb chinook on hearing. Pops fished purples all morning and hooked four at Nehalem. He was putting on a clinic. I have never had anysuccess with spinners there, unlike Tillamook. A friend of mine fished today up by Nehalem and hooked a 24lb chinook on cut plug purple lable hearing. The key is to be out there early and I mean O dark hundred. By 10:00 it is over the bite is off, or go to the jetty. Also, be sure to troll with the tide you you'll cover alot more water.
