Although Sturgeon fishing is closed I would still like a heads up for how fishing is going for sturgeon so any report or advice would be great.

Sturgeon is only closed to retention on the Columbia downstream of McNary Dam. You can still fish the Columbia above McNary, the Willamette and all the coastal rivers and keep them.

I believe the Willamette and the Multnomah Channel are open for catching. However, with the water sooooo warm, a lot of stress may hurt the ones you love  )

The Willamette is open for Sturgeon, but all are small. Had one Sunday 40 inch and in nice shape, hope to see it next year..

Peelers were definitly happening below bonneville this weekend. Take the middle section of a large roe laiden shad, stretchy thread it to retain the eggs, bath it in WD-40, drop into fast deep water at the edge of the channel, and give it maybe ten minutes.

Try using light tackle if you want a challenge. I use barbless hooks and crawlers with a steelhead rod and even the small shakers are fun, especially for the kids. If a big one comes by and takes the worm and gives you a fun overmatched contest than hang on for as long as you can! If you break it off then no big deal because you have to release them anyway.

Sturgeonbait,

6 ounces of teardrop lead on a 3 foot dropper below a 3 way swivel. Use relatively light line for your dropper, as snags are common. Short short leader on your hook. Use a single sandshrimp and cast off the bank about 30 ft at the Powerline hole on Bradford Island at Bonneville. Go down the side that faces Washington.

Dont fish out in the main current or you will just get snagged and/or wont be able to hold bottom. Fish right in the back eddy. You will be surprized at how close you can fish to the bank and catch fish.

Every time I go I hook into at least 4 oversize, and always a few shakers. If you plan on bringing a fish to shore, bring big game gear.

Of course, if you are trying for keepers, then just skip this, as its C&R only.

Matt
