For those of you who have been fishing the Wheeler area recently...how has the seaweed been lately?
I was down there a few weeks ago and the seaweed was so thick that it was almost like trolling in Tillamook Bay. Had to keep checking our gear every few minutes to clear off the green stuff.....I am a meat eater, so that salad was of no interest to me!

With the big tide swings, Sunday it was as bad as anywhere I've ever seen. Bead Chains, weed guards and bait checks every five minutes.....

The weeds are pretty bad at Nehalem, but it seams to be much worse on the incoming.

No shortage of vegetation ... I was using divers and they seemed to catch most of it. Not a huge problem, I don't know how bad it gets - first time I've fished in the bay (though I'm tempted to go catch another!). It was worse out by the jetty - there were big floating salads.
I caught a crab on a herring! Not a keeper though - the story of the day

Thanks for the updates.
Depending upon ocean conditions, I may be there Saturday....So I'll just be prepared to deal with the vegitation.
Phish_on, that must have been one aggressive crab to attack your herring! Were you trolling? I would have been afraid that the crab would drop into the boat and try to take my leg off or something.

We had good luck on the crab trolling with plug cut purple label at the upper end of Torpedo Alley (Wheeler). No keepers though.

I was hung up on the bottom long enough for crabby to grab it. What was impressive was how much she ate in a minute or so - maybe several were working on it ... only one refused to let go

Ooh, look at the suicidal herring that just torpedoed itself into the bottom...
Hmm I think I'll take advantage of this...tastes fine...
Dang thing hit bottom so hard it lost it's head....
What the ??? Now it's swimming again...?
Man this thing is strong...well I'll just hang on and chomp on it until it dies....
Uh Oh!!
