Went fishing with Catch and Eat and Neutron on Saturday at buoy 10, great time

I landed a 28lb chinook that was fin clipped! We talked about this and could not figure out why it was clipped.

Does anyone know about this?

The fish had sea lice on it but was not chrome. She had nice eggs and the meat was nice and red so what did I catch! Pretty sure it was not a tule  Help!

Why do pictures make me look short and fat...arrrgghhh!! :hoboy:

FM2,

NICE FISH! I would have figured it was a Tule, but who knows.

By the way, I must be wrong, but I thought the fishery was closed on Friday and Saturday??? Am I missing something???

FM2 -

That Chinook probably has a microscopic tag embedded in it's head. I have caught them like that before and the checkers notch the top of the head out of the fish.

If you still have the head you can turn it in to an ODFW location and they analyze the tag and will tell you the history of the fish if you want to know it.

ChinookSlayer -

The ocean is closed on Friday and Saturdays (And totally to chinook BTW) but Buoy 10 upstream is open 7 days a week to both species...

Thanks Hogmaster for the info and clarifying the fishing days for chinookslayer.

I thought I read back a while back about a certain hatchery in Washington or an Indian tribe that clipped chinook but can't totally recall this, old age is kicking in I guess  :hoboy:

Those were nice fish Keith. You sure showed the rest of us how it was done. Big Bait and Big Flasher. WOW!!!!

Don't you just hate the "de-liar scale"? 28lbs hen and she was clipped. I would like to know where it came from too.

Nice to fish with you. Had a great time Saturday and hope we can do it again. BTW I fixed that wire problem and it ran flawless Sunday.

Don't know Stugeon42, I hoping someone might know why this nook was clipped, it was a nice clip job too, the back was as smooth as Gizmo's head

Did you check around for the "liar" scale Bernie, I thought I saw something black that resembled it floating past us on the way in graemlins/berry.gif

Thanks Pete, biiiggg bait was the ticket, that thing at my feet is what I found in the belly of that bad girl

At leased this time FM 2 caught his fish on the Columbia River, now that makes me feel more like the true baton holder  I have been working hard and hardly fishing. I do hope to get out and catch a salmon soon and I might even do that with a little help like FM 2 has been getting. I am thinking of painting the baton black and selling it to a police man, boy won't he be mad  when his fishing starts to go down the drain. For now I will just have to enjoy catching Steelhead and other game fish.

I wonder if there are Batons in heaven, I sure hope not.

Hi FM2,
I don't know what that clipping meant other than it could have been the latest fashion trend.  graemlins/idea.gif

Great looking fish though!!! Looks like you had a great time too.

I got a 13# chinook saturday that had the left ventricle clipped, and a 14# chinook on the 2nd with a clipped left ventricle and a clipped adipose?

I was told they were a Rogue River strain from the N. fork klaskanine hatchery?

Regardless........they taste great smoked!

Hogmaster has it right. A fin clipped Chinook has a micro tag imbedded in it's head. The information contained in the tag will tell researchers everything about it (age, location of origin, etc). You might want to take the head to the nearest ODFW station. They would be interested in the information.

BTW - Those are two very nice fish.
