Going to be out of Garibaldi for Salmon near Twin rocks. I'm told go west from the rocks til ya hit 215' depth and fish 20 pulls. This info is 2 weeks old. Do you have the fresh skinny? Gonna check it out Sunday.
How nasty can the Tillamook bar be on the ebb? It's a -1.4' diff. Would it be a problem to return before low slack? Or do I get in during high slack @ 11a for a short day?

Fish,

There will be others putting their input on this soon, but Tillamook can be EXTREMELY dangerous during the ebb. Not always of course, but it can be. The tides have been pretty slight but even so it is always wise to plan a trip with a flood crossing.

You should be done by 11 anyway!

Happy fishing!

Geribaldi is a scary bar...any bar can be at low ebb. What day are you planning to go?

I am planning on being there on Sunday. I just spoke to the charter office and am told that they have been getting good numbers of big chinook...190 ft of water. I have my parnter in route to Geribaldi righ now and will have a dockside report for me before dark.

Hey..have you considered going further out for Ablacore? I'm looking into coordinates off Geribaldi to see how far out they are...I'm hearing 25-30 miles and that is within my range. Might you care to buddy up?

Just got the call from Geribaldi. Chinook are biting well at Twin Rocks...200ft. They are also doing very well with hali...several 50+lb fish on the docks.

Can't wait for flat water on Sunday!!

Just got back from Tillamook. Three of us fished for 5 hours west of Twin Rocks. Tried divers at 20 pulls and downriggers at various depths.
Released 5 coho between us and hooked 0 Chinook.
Fish checker at the marina said he was seeing about 1 fish per 4 anglers.

I was out there two weeks ago. The boat limited on silvers, but no chinook. Saw lots of chinook caught though. We didn't have a lot of time to play around. If we did, i'm sure we could have got a chinook. We got our first silver two miles out and only ended up going about five miles out. If I were you I would head northwest. Go north towards twin rocks, then go west about 5-6miles out. Just look for the boats. The people getting the chinook were fishing deeper than we were. We just went out 15 pulls for the silvers, though I would go 40 for the chinook. If you have a downrigger, drop it down to 45 feet. You should be able to boat one. Good luck. Brian

Me and a friend of mine fished Tillamook yesterday in 200-225 feet, west of Twin Rocks. We landed one Nook and lost another one at the boat. Also landed 4 coho. Magic depth seem to be 25 pulls for Nook's.

Any one else got an opinion on the falling tide Tillamook bar crossing? Will be a small swing and not the lowest low of the day at 348 pm.
Thanks for the info everyone.
Angle, we plan to launch by 5am at Garibaldi Sunday. We plan to stick to the salmon plan and get back in near high slack at 11am. I don't want to hold you up on your trip to tuna town. Your welcome to buddy up with us for the trip west of Twin Rocks. Would be good to stay in contact and swap lies. Hail me as "Fight Club" or Fish Hunter on 16, if we buddy up or not. I'll send you an email w/ my cell #. My tub is a red 19' North River with black canvas. What does the Adrianna look like again?

Off to do a search for Tuna tech, and get a tuna clue.

Hmmm.... conflicting reports. I'm beginning to think Sunday, with such good conditions, should be dedicated to a first tuna trip. Anyone else thinking along these lines? I'm not going that far out in ANY conditions without another boat, so anyone considering tuna fishing on Sunday, please email me.

Good deal, fish hunter. Tuna Town is an "only if" thing, and so is only 50/50 at best at this point. If I don't go to tuna town, I'll probably head to 3 arch rocks after limiting on salmonoids...I've got the ling spots dialed in; feel free to join us there. I'll give you a call tomorrow afternoon on your cell when I get into town.

I am reasonably sure that the bar will not be ugly after the high low Sunday afternoon. I'll probably wait until after the slack, but I'd be real suprised to see it breaking given the hieght of the tide and the swell conditions. I do plan on a fairly full day on big blue. If I'm wrong, afternoon conditions should permit waiting outside to cross.

My dog has improved so much today, I am going to take him down to the coast with me tomorrow...neurostimulation is key right now. He has no stamina and won't be going out to sea, Nancy will dog sit on shore, but I'll wager he's got his PFD (and helmet) on before the end of the month. I'm feeling my luck is so good I may throw back everything under 30lbs this weekend!!

Made an executive decesion yesterday to modify my place of slaughter to Twin Rocks since B10 sounds like a fish ghost town.

We launched at Garibaldi at daylight and dropped 4 pots in the ocean. Headed west until we got to 180 feet. Dropped the 2 rods in the water and started trolling. We would have had 3 rods but Gus Orviston showed up at the meeting place with a bottle of Immodium AD in his hand and saying he wasnt gonna make it any where but the toilet. I should have known this was a start to a crappy day

We get our first take down at 225 feet and miss the fish. We continue out to 250 feet and get our second take down and it straightens the hook before I get the rod out of the holder

Hit number 3 missed, hit number 4 missed, hit number 5 missed, and all of these were at or near 250 feet. Hit number 6 straightens a hook again before we get it out of the rod holder again  This was on the way back in at 180 feet. We toss those wonderful hooks in a pile and retie some different hooks we could round up in the boat. We troll around a while and dont get any more hits and head home.

We got 11 crabs.

And you ask what are these wonderful hooks that are made of rubber and silly puddy and have the bending strength of warm string cheese?? I was out of 5 ot hooks on Friday and stopped at a sporting goods store and about all they had was Eagle Claw Lazer sharp model L226NG Saltwater hooks in Nickel. I figured they would be fine  Well I figured wrong. And my fishing partner has never tagged a salmon in his life and I have to apologize for not having a better hook to get the skunk off his first ever salmon tag. graemlins/stupid.gif

I just cant believe any 5 ot hook would bend with 30 pound leader. I always buy a certain brand of hook (not going to start the hook wars again by naming it) and I guess I am going back to them again without exception. The drag was set loose enough for the fish to peel all it wanted, but no, the hook bends on the strike.

Talked to several guys at the ramp who had fish. Most of them came from 290 to 300 foot depth line. We were not quite far enough out to find any quantity of fish. It was about a hit an hour. We were fishing cut plug, at 40 pulls with 12 ounces of lead when we got each hit.

I am sure we did better than we would have at B10, even though we came home empty. I doubt my partner would have puked his guts out at B10 though. We were in some big 3 foot swells with 4 inch wind waves

Fished out of Garabaldi today. Crossed the bar at 7:15 and headed north towards twin rocks. Ocean was bumpy and the wind was decent. Started fishing at 250 ft off of Twin rocks. Trolled out to 300 feet with one take down, a coho. turned south and trolled the 280 to 300 foot line. Ended up with 6 chinook by 1:00. The last three fish were caught over 2 miles south of the bar entrance. Traveled over 7 miles south in the trip. Whole or cut herring 30 to 35 pulls with 12 oz of lead no flashers.
Met bait o eggs on the dock. The top he built on his boat was very nice. He was also nice enough to snap some pics. Will have them by Wed and will add to the post. Two largest 30 and 27 and the rest in the low 20's to high teens.
