My all time favorite spinner for steelhead fishing is a Super Roostertail. I know it looks like a bass lure - spinner bait. The black with silver blade in 1/6 to 1/4 ounce is deadly on the steelies. The blade spin is great without the line twisting affects. The lure can be dragged on the bottom of the river or stream with a fair amount of success against snagging the bottom because it is equipped with a dual hook - they both point upwards. I've seen them for sale at Fisherman's Marine Supply in Portland. If I had to be placed on a summer steelhead stream with only one lure that would be the one I'd choose. Never tried them on the Deschutes but I bet they would do well. Let the lure drift - blade will spin regardless of tension. I catch a lot of steelhead when I can spot them and cast near them (within 5-10 radius). I throw out the spinner and let it fall without reeling. I've gotten some vicious strikes that way. Maybe the splash and the blade spin looks like an injured bug? Give them a try. Work the pocket water.

Luguando,

Everybody knows you can't catch steelhead on a bass lure!

Blue Fox's are OK, but very expensive!! I make my own and do very well on them. My favorite is a #4 Brass French Blade w/ either Black or Brass body weights, and a green bead @ the hook end, and a #2 Siwash Hook. You can make spinners in any weight or color combination you want, and can make 5 spinners for the cost of 1 Blue Fox Spinner!!

Steelies, tadpollies, and other castable plugs will work, metrics in 3 or 4. Good luck and adapt to the water levels & conditions.
