Alvin Olsen was fishing 30 miles off shore when he began experiencing heart problems.

The vessel's captain used a cell phone to call the Coast Guard. An aircrew from Newport hoisted Olsen from the charter boat and flew him to the Newport Airport. From there, he was taken by ambulance to Pacific Communities Hospital.

Rescuers said most cell phones won't work that far out to sea, and Olsen was lucky that they received the call.

The Coast Guard said FM channel 16 is the primary distress frequency for contacting the rescuers.
