Hi All!

We left Dutch Harbor on Friday after a wonderful port call. Although I didn't manage to get any Reds (and Torchman made fun of the one tiny Halibut I managed to get!) one of my shipmates and I hooked into some AWESOME Dolly Varden fishing. It seemed that, with my entire arsenal of gear, the only thing the fishies wanted was a #5 hot pink Vibrax with a silver blade. That one lure took about 3 dozen fish including flounder, a few little rock cod and Dollies!

I had a blast fishing the Dollies. They were so chrome they look like little steelies! (OK... for a while I was torn between which they were... but the concensus was they're Dollies... I've never fished them before so I wasn't sure) The largest one weighed about 4#.

We'll be in Nome again tomorrow, so I hope to find some more River access fishing for Dollies or Grayling. :-)

Hope you're all having a great Summer!

Love, Rain

Rain,

I commercial fished for king crab and shrimp out of Dutch Harbor for 4 years and I know it pretty well. Wow, it sure brings back some memories, both good and not so good. I hope you made a couple stops in the Elbow Room for some refreshments and a chat with the locals. On my first trip way up there the crew kept telling me there was a woman behind every tree and I had to find out the hard way that there are no trees in Dutch.

HA! Yeah... I saw those "trees" Marty! I could fit behind one... but that's not saying much!

I was a "bad sailor" but a "good fisherman"... I didn't make it to the Elbow Room... I was too busy fishing! :-)

I took our Munson out for Morale Fishing trips every day, so, with the exception of the one trip I got to get off the boat in Broad Bay to fish those Dollys, I spent most of my time as the "Charter Captain". :-) Someone else got to be the "Master Baiter". ("Mistress Baiter" just doesn't have the same ring, you know?)

I thoroughly enjoyed Dutch.... I wish we could have spent more time there. We'll be anchored off Nome tonight. Last two times we were in Nome I didn't get to do much (OK, I DID buy a t-shirt in the Polaris and did get to go do a little drinkin' at the Anchor... Cinco de Mayo and all...) but I didn't get to go pan for gold or fish. I'm hoping to do both this time.

I love Alaska... wish I could stay here forever!
