Whats up everyone... This fire in unbelievable.... I moved to Madras for the summer to work at the lumber mill, and fish alot.. (just finished my first year at OSU) Anyhow, the sky here is completly overcast with smoke from this fire.... Its raining ash in madras.... I drove up to round butte overlook, and it was amazing... I could see the fire on the other side of the lake, burning up the canyon... QUITE A SIGHT.....!!! Hope they get this thing under control before it burns any houses....

Anyhoo, on a fishing related topic... I have been fishing the Deschutes quite a bit lately (just about every day).... And just to warn all you Ifish Flyfishermen and women... DO NOT FISH THE DESCHUTES.. and if you do fish it... DO NOT USE A #14 ELK HAIR CADDIS.... Those darn trout wont leave you alone if you do.... Your arm will practically fall off....

Seriously tho, two days ago was the most amazing flyfishing I've had on the Deschutes... Starting at first light, the air was thick with swarms of caddis..... The trout in a feeding frenzy all morning, till about noon or so.. then settled down a bit... but where still feeding heavily... I think i landed about 25, and hooked at least 10 more fish from daylight, till 1pm..... All where fish from 14-19 inches.... Landed one that pushed 20....VERY acrobatic fish right now... strong, healthy and jump alot.... like i said.... DO NOT FISH THE DESCHTUES... You will be too busy fighting fish to even enjoy the amazing scenery....

Anyways.. just thought i would give everyone a heads up on the D..... Im gonna start fishing the Mouth for steelies fairly soon... Anyone fish that lately!?!?!?

Anyhoo, im gonna go tie some flies now, my boxes are gettin a little thin......
tight lines everyone

I just learned that my Dept. may end up sending a crew(s) to this fire.

I'm on vacation darn-it....I've got fishing and crabbing and clamming and hiking and biking to do!

In all seriousness, I hope they get a handle on this fire quickly and this fire season doesn't end up the way my gut is telling me it's going to turn out.

My hopes and prayers go out to the folks who live in that area, as well as the people over there fighting the fires.

Hey Whersmybobber, you from dist#1?? I'm from TVFR. Sounds like it from your reply. If so I think we're definetly in for a bad fire season. Hopefully not so it doesn't affect to many Firefighters, homes, fishing and hunting country, etc..........

ladtrips:

Since you live in Canby, we might have a mutual friend - Don P.? (He's a good friend and fishing partner of mine)

I work for Gresham, at the Troutdale station. I talked to my Captain tonight and he said we may be sending some folks over to the fire, he's getting ready, but hadn't gotten any official word yet. I'm not sure how it would affect me, but I could get called back in from vacation as you know.

Shoot me a line anytime, we may know each other.

Take care,
Neal Dietz

Hey bobber, yes you're correct about Don P graemlins/stupid.gif . We graduated high school together. I haven't fished with Don in years. We both used to be die hards until we had kids, jobs, etc......
Talk to you later.

The fire has reportedly spread (as of 10:00 PM Saturday night) to 13,000 acres. 7 structures destroyed. 300 homes in the Three Rivers subdivision near Madras evacuated. My thoughts go to the safety of the firefighters, residents and visitors in the area. The landscape will change, but fire is part of the dry ponderosa forest system. To those called to work on this fire, be safe, stay safe and thank you.

One fact not reported is that this area is extremely important mule deer wintering range.

Fire is needed to restore the forbs and grasses the deer depend on during winter. Coming this time of year, after the fire there's plenty of time for autumn rains and an abundant green-up that the deer and other wildlife will benefit from.

Fires are nerve-wracking for property owners and can be dangerous if we put people in the way, but fire is a necessary part of the landscape's cycle. Central and eastern Oregon is fire county; always has been, always will be.

From the looks of the location of the fire I fear for the Bull Trout spawning areas, the Metolis (sp) is one of only a few cold water fisheries to have a population of BT where you can actually retain a fish, up to double digits... even the kokanee go up there... :depressed: :depressed:

Not to worry Steve, the Bull Trout spawning tribs are on the north and west sides of the river opposite the fire's direction.

There may have been some Bull Trout minor tribs where the fire started on the Warm Springs Res. but where it's really burning 3Rivers, Fly Lake, and the tablelands there's no trout habitat at all.

Sounds like a few of you have been doing your fire ecology homework. I studied this stuff in college in the late 70's. We knew the facts about natures cycle would never be popular. Most studies show deer populations will approach up to 7 times their former levels about 3-5 years after a fire. Not only deer but all wildlife seems to hit peak levels at some point after a fire. What makes them so devastating (according to us humans ) is after years of fire suppression we get these intensive feul fed fires we have little control over. Without fire suppression we would see smaller erratic wildfires. It is unfortunate that we have to risk humans to deal with these monsters.
